Obituary of Joan Nilsen

Joan Nilsen, age 82, of Honesdale died Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes Barre. Joan was born September 11, 1932 in Jamaica, NY. and was the daughter of the late John D. and Ruth (Hals) Nilsen. She attended New Paltz University and graduated from New York University with a BA in English. She was an editor of professional and reference books for McGraw-Hill Publishing in New York City. Joan was the 2007 recipient of the Charles and Alma Hames Volunteer of the Year Award for the Hawley Library. Her quote was " A room without books is like a house without windows" Joan was also a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and the Sons Of Norway, Bernt Balchen Lodge 3/566, Rowland, PA. She is survived by one brother: Walter E. Nilsen of Forest Hills, NY. Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 20th, from 1 to 3 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA, followed by the funeral service at 3:00 with Rev. Norman R. Beighley, Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. Memorials may be made to Hawley Public Library, 103 Main Ave., Hawley, PA 18428.
