Obituary of Martha N. Adams-Birtel

Martha N. Adams-Birtel, age 47, a lifelong resident of Hawley died following a long battle with cancer on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Shawn A. Birtel.

Born December 29, 1969, in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late John Adams and the late Patricia Milzie (DeGroat) Gelderman. She attended Wallenpaupack Area High School and was a cook and waitress at the Hawley Diner for many years. A member of Guardians Of Mercy Animal League, Martha loved the outdoors, gardening and hiking.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Chloe R. Birtel of Honesdale and Sophia P. Birtel of Hawley; one son: Liam A. Birtel of Hawley; two brothers: Richard Gelderman of Hawley and Dave Gelderman of Boone, NC; and one sister: Nancy Armstrong of Butler, TN.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Dan Gelderman, in May 2017.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 19, at 11 AM at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 405 Church St., Hawley, PA  18428. Private cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

Memorials may be made to the Birtel family to assist with expenses.
