Obituary of Peter Slocum Porter
Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peter Slocum Porter, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away on February 9, 2025 at the age of 80. Born on July 11, 1944, he was the son of the late Dr. Richard A. and Frances Slocum Porter. Peter was the beloved husband of Jill Swingle Porter for 44 years, and the proud father of Brian (Philippa Porter), Briton (Brittany Wack), and Amanda (Alex Schmalzle). He was also a loving grandfather to Charlie Porter, Keaton Porter, Eva Schmalzle, and Eliza Schmalzle, who brought him endless joy.
Peter was a man of many passions, known for his wit, wisdom, and love for his family and friends. A graduate of the Hawley High School Class of 1962, the University of Scranton, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and a proud Navy veteran (radioman 3c), he was always eager to share stories from his many adventures in life. He had a remarkable career as a realtor, broker, and appraiser at Peter Porter Realty, Inc., where his integrity and dedication earned him the respect of many clients and colleagues.
Outside of work, Peter was a true renaissance man. He was a skilled pilot, a master falconer, a passionate sailor, and a trap shooter. He was a Past Master of the Hawley Masonic Lodge. His hobbies were as diverse as his talents, but above all, he was a storyteller, captivating all who listened with his rich tales of life and adventure.
Peter’s legacy lives on through his two sisters, Susie Porter George and Jo Porter, his brother-in-law Bruce Bergethon, along with his nieces and nephews, and the many friends and colleagues who admire his warm heart and generous spirit. He was a man who lived life to its fullest, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the stories he told, the love he shared, and the lessons he imparted.
A memorial service will be held at Hawley United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 15th at 11 am, with visitation from 10:30 to 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Hawley Public Library in Peter’s honor.
