Obituary of John Raymond Moran
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ray Moran, a man who never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, surrounded by the people he loved the most. He was 85.
Born on October 10, 1939, Ray packed a lot into his years. He grew up in Jersey City, spent time in North Plainfield, NJ, and eventually settled into the peaceful pace of Tanglewood Lakes in Greentown, PA. He was the kind of guy who loved a good round of golf, a strong glass of Jameson, and being right in the middle of any social gathering.
Ray made a career on the floors of the New York and American Stock Exchanges, working as a stockbroker, exchange official and Vice President of A.G. Edwards & Sons. After 41 years, he hung up his jacket and enjoyed retirement by captaining his boat with his first mate and loving wife Darlene on their 42-foot Krogen trawler, completing the Great Loop, and eventually docking in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Ray served in the Air National Guard, spending time in Europe during the building of the Berlin Wall. He was also deeply involved in his community and beyond, as a member of the Freemasons in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners, and the DeMolay Alumni Association.
Ray was a collector of Dorflinger glass and corkscrews—yes, really—and a proud member of both the Canadian Corkscrew Collectors Club and the Dorflinger Glass Museum. He also spent a lot of time at Paupack Hills Country Club, where he loved playing golf almost as much as chatting it up with his fellow members.
Ray was predeceased by his beloved wife Darlene who he married on July 20, 1963. Together they traveled and shared so many adventures. He is survived by his daughters Tara and Heather, his son Sean, and his grandchildren Henry, Kelly, and Anna. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Eydie and Frank Fonti.
Calling hours will be Thursday, April 24, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at Teeters' Funeral Chapel, 507 Church St, Hawley, PA. There will be a Masonic service beginning at 11 AM followed by Ray's memorial service with Rev. Ronald R. Miller of St. John's Episcopal Church of Hamlin officiating. Inurnment will be held immediately following the memorial service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 507, Paupack, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to the Tafton Fire Company, PO Box 5, Tafton, PA 18464 or the Regional Hospital of Scranton, 746 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA 18501.
