Obituary of Alfred Randolph Tomlin Jr
Please share a memory of Alfred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alfred Randolph "Randy" Tomlin Jr., a beloved husband, father, and respected businessman, passed away peacefully on May 17th at the age of 76 during a fishing trip— an activity that brought him immense joy and peace throughout his life.
Randy was born on September 24, 1948, in Montclair, New Jersey, and was the second child of Alfred Randolph Tomlin Sr. and Doretha Curvy Tomlin. He grew up alongside his sisters Camari Gaines and Lisa White, forming a strong family bond. Randy went to Howard University, where he majored in business and played football.
Randy’s early adult years were exciting since he played running back for the Washington Redskins for a season before a career-ending injury brought his time on the field to an abrupt end. Returning to Montclair, he channeled his drive into entrepreneurship, opening a fishing and tackle shop and a CB radio equipment store. It was during this time that he met Michelle Henry, the woman who would become his wife, best friend, and cherished companion for 35 years.
Professionally, Randy had tremendous success working at Herman’s World of Sporting Goods where he rose from a retail sales associate to Regional Vice President of Operations, overseeing stores from New York to Virginia. His leadership was marked by integrity, strategy, and a natural talent for mentorship. After Herman’s closed, Randy co-founded RJR Management, a consulting firm that advised businesses on risk management and organizational assessment. He was known as a steady presence who brought clarity and confidence to complex situations.
Randy was a lifelong fisherman and served as President of the New Jersey Bass Federation. He and Michelle made annual fishing trips to lakes across the Northeast and South, creating lifelong memories for them both. Randy was known for being tech-obsessed, was a master griller, and let everyone know that football Sundays were sacred—no phone calls, no texting with no exceptions. The only interruption that was allowed was loving on his dog, Blu!
Randy is survived by his loving wife, Michelle Tomlin, sisters, Camari Gaines and Lisa White and his brother-in-law, Frank White, and sister in-law Linda Henry-Morgan. He absolutely adored his daughter, Camari Tomlin and he loved his stepchildren, Anthony Henry and Robin Henry Spalding—who gave him the immeasurable gift of life through a kidney donation in 2010. He was a devoted grandfather to: Ebony, Andrew, Alicia, Sean Jr., Kevin, Makayla, Joseph, Christopher, Marcus, and Miles. Randy had a host of loving nieces and nephews, including Cory, Tami, Daryl, Derek and Amber Gaines, Shawna Smith and Noel Morgan. He is reunited in spirit with his late son, Sean Tomlin and brothers-in- law, Richard and Mallory Gaines.
He will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the lives he touched—deeply, intentionally, and forever.
