Shawn August Birtel, age 54, military veteran, of Hawley, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 31, 2025, in Reno, NV. His wife, Martha Adams Birtel, died in 2017. They were married for 15 years.

Born July 19, 1970, in Honesdale, PA, he was the son of the late Carl and Evelyn Birtel. He attended Wallenpaupack Area High School and joined the Army upon graduation. Shawn served with the 702nd Medical Company, 85th Medical Battalion.

He is survived by his three children: Chloe Birtel of Hawley, Sophia Birtel (fiancé Lorenzo) of Blakely and Liam Birtel of Scranton; six siblings: Martha Foy (Pete) of Alburg, VT, Linda Birtel of Royersford, PA, Patricia Steimling Houtman (Leon) of Tafton, Mark Birtel (Debbie) of Jefferson Township, Eric Birtel of Phoenix, AZ, and Amy Birtel Smith (Jason) of Middleburg, VA. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

A Desert Storm Army medic veteran, Shawn struggled with loss, PTSD, mental illness, and many hardships during his life. Known for his generosity, he often gave selflessly, even when in need himself. He loved his children, family, and friends with everything he could give.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 19th at 11am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 401 Church St., Hawley, PA.
