I meet Sensei Carl when my son Matthew started going to his dojo. When I first saw Sensei Carl I was intimidated by his exterior because my son and I were shy people. But he won us over with his warmth and kindness. He took my son under his wing and became a great friend/ employer to me. He used to tell me stories about his family, that he loved so. My prayers and condolences to his family, God bless you all. Rest in peace dear Sensei

In Loving Memory of Sensei Carl
Sensei Carl welcomed me into his home in the middle of my freshman year of high school—not because I was his favorite, and not because my mom asked—but because he cared deeply about every single kid who stepped foot on the dojo floor. He saw something in me, saw the direction I was headed, and made sure I changed course.
Looking back now as a father, I realize how much of what I learned in that year living with the Thomas family shaped the values I bring into my own home today.
Sensei, you came off as tough and unshakable on the outside, but around your girls, you were what we now call a true “girl dad.” That term didn’t exist back then, but it would’ve fit you perfectly.
You were an incredible friend, father, mentor, sensei, and yes—a bit of a lovable dictator too. It’s taken me 25 years and my own journey through parenthood to fully understand the gift you were in my life.
We lost a gem.
Thank you for everything.
With love and gratitude,
Ariel “Ari” David

We first met in 1995 and spent the next 25 years traveling around the country. Too many flights and hotel rooms, leading us to too many special events and concerts....so picking out one or two memories would do injustice to those that weren't mentioned. Some rough times mixed in with mostly fond memories will be forever cherished.
Like anyone who ever knew Carl, we were never always in agreement, but we made it work. The impact you had on people is evident by the sheer numbers of those who I come across and always ask about you.
A great friend, father, teacher, Detective, street-smart philosopher and drinker of Diet Coke....NO PEPSI....you will never be forgotten.

I met Carl in the courts. I was a court officer, Carl and Derrick would bring in the warrants. Carl was a fun loving person, when they brought in defendants there was always a bunch of laughing and joking around that went on. The defendants even respected him. ( they knew better). I’m so very sorry for your loss. Take solace in knowing he’s walking beside Jesus now

Carl always had a smile and a great warrior spirit. His memory will be of everlasting love and respect; for his family, friends, colleagues and the NYPD. Blessings for him and all of those he cared about.

I knew Carl through karate, although we only ever overlapped at a few ceremonies. I recall once he took me aside to whisper some good (private) advice about my daughter. I was struck by the respect he showed me, even though I was his junior in age and very much his junior in rank. He had my full respect.
