Obituary of Evelyn Sherman Singleton

Evelyn Sherman Singleton was born Evelyn Marshall Sherman to Maude Holland-Sherman and Edward Forrester Sherman Senior on October 6,1922 in New York City. She was the first child in a family of three which included her brother Edward and younger brother Richard in New York City in an area called The Village. The family moved to Harlem, and Evelyn experienced a great loss at age 14 with the sudden death of her mother. Despite the boys living in one household and her another for a short time, they remained very close. The family grew by one son named John Janis when her father married Regina Sherman affectionately known as “Grandma Gene”. Evelyn had one daughter, Carol Ann Nadine when she met and married her husband, Thomas Singleton. They had one son, Michael James who was her pride and joy. She often spoke of her children spending lots of time with her very special niece Rachel at Grandma Gene’s house. Evelyn was devoted to caring for her family and working hard to provide for them while enjoying life with Tommie. They worked together over the years and established a home environment that became a haven for family and friends. She loved cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, music old westerns, shopping and traveling. Evelyn held many jobs as a young adult, but nursing became her passion. She was an LPN for many years and returned to school to obtain her Registered Nurse Degree from Queensborough Community College in 1973 and was licensed in the state of New York. She always spoke of being the only grandmother in her graduating class. Her work ethic was top tier and her meticulous attention to detail required to manage an entire ward in the hospital is exactly the way she ran her household. She had an amazing gift of work/family life balance. Her sacrificial love and family first mentality has kept her family bonded together through some of the most difficult times. Her daughter and grandchildren spent lots of time throughout the years living in her home in Queens as well as her retirement home in Pennsylvania. Her entire life journey/commitment was to her family. During the last twenty years of her life, she enjoyed the fruits of her labor. Evelyn lived in Kansas, New York and Florida, shopped for whatever she wanted, and traveled Minneapolis, MN, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisianna, and Hawaii. Evelyn was proceeded in death by her husband Thomas “Tommie”, daughter Carole, son Michael, brothers Edward “Chinkie” and Richard, great grandson Terence and great great granddaughter India. She is survived by her grandchildren Garrett, Forrest (Toya), Terence, Nicole (Lonnie), eleven great grandchildren, twelve great, great grandchildren and one great great great grandson “Zoe”, nieces, nephews and a host of loving friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday, July 7th at 10 AM at B.V.M. Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, PA. Burial will be in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.
