Janis Lorraine Tveter Obituary

Saddle River, NJ – Janis Lorraine Tveter, 90, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025.

Born on September 7, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, Janis Lorraine Syre was the daughter of Anna Martha Johnson and Ingolf Involsen Syre. She was known throughout her life for her grace, warm sense of humor, and deep love for her family.

Janis grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn during the Great Depression, an experience that shaped her resilient spirit and lifelong values. Despite the hardships, she often recalled those early years fondly, cherishing the strong bonds she shared with her siblings: her beloved sister Gloria Nilsen and younger brothers Ronald Clifford Syre, David Syre, and Gilbert Thomas Syre.

On January 8, 1955, Janis married the love of her life, John Kenneth Tveter (Ken), in Bay Ridge. Together, they raised five children: Mark Steven Tveter, Laura Tveter Brunette, Thomas Kenneth Tveter, Lisa Tveter Nowell, and Douglas John Tveter.

Janis and Ken shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2014. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a proud grandmother who found immense joy in her growing family (13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren).

In 1960, the Tveter family moved to West Nyack, NY, where they built their first home on Strawberry Hill. While raising five children, Janis returned to school and earned her Registered Nurse certification in 1976.

She worked nights as a dedicated nurse in hospitals across Northern New Jersey for several years.

In 1980, Janis and Ken built their second home in New City, NY, where they spent 16 wonderful years. They also spent many happy summers at the Masonic Camp in Harriman State Park, creating lasting memories with friends and family.

In 1996, they relocated to Woodloch Springs in Hawley, PA, where Janis spent the next 26 years. There, she and Ken found a vibrant and welcoming community, remaining active in both social life and church.

Janis and Ken especially loved hosting family gatherings in Woodloch—magical times that her children and grandchildren will always treasure.

Janis's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E 33rd St #8, New York, NY 10016.
