Generosa Lopez Obituary

Generosa Lopez, age 94, of Hawley died Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Generosa was the daughter of the late Bernardino Maldonado and the late Georgina Perez Maldonado Davis. She had the distinction of having two birthdays. Although born on November 17, 1930, she was so tiny that doctors did not expect her to survive and therefore didn't make a birth certificate for her. It was not until December 10, 1930, that doctors realized that she was thriving and would indeed survive, so her official birthday became December 10.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ismael V. Lopez, in 2005. However, it took two marriages to reach that 45-year mark. They were married for 22 years before divorcing. After a marital "intermission," they remarried and spent the next 23 years together until Ismael's death in 2005.

Generosa spent most of her career as facilities manager at Columbia University, where she supervised every detail of every special event held by the university. She also assisted in the transition of the university to computerization. Carrying on her lifelong theme of doing things twice Generosa was so amazing at her job that she retired twice, having been called back to work after her first retirement in 1993 when Columbia was unable to find anyone who could do her job. She returned to train several people to meet the proficiency which she had accomplished.

She is survived by three daughters: Virginia Green of Saugerties, NY, Anna M. Lopez also of Saugerties, NY, and her former husband Luis Artie Torres, and Melinda Igartura and her husband Michael; two sons: Angel Lopez and his wife Shari of Belle Harbor, NY and Jaime John Lopez and his wife Justine of Laceyville, PA; two sisters: Elizabeth Rhonda of Brooklyn, NY and Nancy Ingber and her husband Ricky of Staten Island, NY; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four siblings: Rosalie Lugo, Carmen Negron, Mary Martinez and Rene Maldonado; a son-in-law, Patrick Green; and a grandson, Patrick Green Jr.

Calling hours will be Monday, October 6, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will follow at 12:30 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Norman Demming officiating. Burial will be in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley.
