Michael James Finney, 73, of Tanglwood North in Tafton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 1, 2025, surrounded by love. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Daniel LaCroix, with whom he shared a life filled with laughter, companionship, and deep affection.
Born on October 10, 1952, in Hagerstown, Maryland, Michael was the beloved son of the late George and Rosemary (Martin) Finney. In addition to Daniel, he is survived by his sister, Marsha Knicley of Hagerstown; his niece, Jordon Knicley of Hagerstown; and his nephew, Jason Knicley of Monrovia, Maryland, along with Jason’s wife Erin and their son Nixon.
Michael’s love of adventure began early in life at The Potomac Fish and Game Club, where he spent countless happy days, especially enjoying water skiing regattas on the Potomac River. The friendships and memories formed there remained dear to him throughout his life.
He attended Hagerstown South High School and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he acted in several theatrical productions. His passion for the arts led him to New York University, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Theater in 1981, which included study abroad in Russia.
Michael enjoyed a distinguished 29-year career as an electronic graphics engineer with ABC-TV in New York. His work contributed to the broadcast of many historic events in both News and Sports, including the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the U.S. Open and British Open golf tournaments, and The ABC Evening News.
In recognition of his talent and dedication, Michael received two Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Electronic Graphics for the 1984 Summer Olympics and another for the 1987 Baseball World Series.
He was a proud member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and NABET, the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians.
Above all, Michael will be remembered for his radiant and magnetic personality, his quick wit and playful sarcasm, and his generous, compassionate heart. A gifted storyteller with a deep knowledge of history, he delighted in entertaining those around him and making people feel welcomed and understood.
He was a loving partner, a devoted family member, and a cherished friend whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and warmth. Michael inspired everyone around him with his generosity, wisdom and creative curse words. He showed up for people in big ways and small ones, and the impact he had on their lives will be felt forever.
Michael was greeted at Heaven’s gates by a wagging tail and a big smile from his adored companion Hannah, a black lab mix, who preceded him in passing. Rest in peace Michael and Hannah.
A private cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. A memorial service is not scheduled at this time.
