John F. Dee, Jr., age 88, of Hawley died peacefully at Wayne Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 15th, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of devotion to family, the sea, and a life well-lived.


Affectionately known as Jack, he was born on November 19, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to the late John Francis Dee and Katherine Miller Dee. A graduate of Lindenhurst High School and SUNY Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, John channeled his love of the water into a long career. He earned his Master Captain's license and achieved the distinguished credential of USCG Master Mariner as a member of the United States Merchant Marine. He later became a Panama Canal Pilot where he would guide the largest of ships safely through one of the world's most important waterways before retiring in 1999.


John was a cherished parish member of BVM Queen of Peace and St. John the Evangelist. He was active in the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth Degree member of the Bishop Hoban Assembly.


He is survived by his beloved wife Gloria of 45 years; his son, John F. Dee, III and wife Alicia of Honesdale; his cherished grandsons Aidan and Blake; and his sister Brenda Shanley of Ave Maria, FL.


A viewing will be held on Sunday, February 22nd from 2 PM to 4 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St., Hawley. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 23rd at 10 AM at BVM Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut St., Hawley.
