Helene Shiko Burgess, age 88, of Hawley died on her birthday Thursday, May 14, 2026, at Julia Ribaudo Extended Care Center, Lake Ariel.

Born May 14, 1938, in Shamokin, PA, Helene was the daughter of the late Stephen L. and Anna (Gogots) Shiko. After growing up in Passiac, NJ, she became a licensed practical nurse. A resident of Clifton, NJ, for most of her adult life, Helene spent her career at the North Jersey Developmental Center.

After her retirement, she moved to Hawley, PA, where she was an active member of First Baptist Church of Hawley. She also enjoyed going to the Hawley Senior Citizen for their exercise classes. Helene was a deeply compassionate person and a friend to all. Her compassion even carried on to her furry cat friends that she cared for, and they loved her in return with affection and keeping her company. She will be missed by her family, friends, neighbors and the members of her church community.

Helene is survived by two sons: Robert Burgess of Clarks Summit and Kenneth Burgess and his life partner Michael Barrows of Fair Lawn, NJ; her brother: George P. Shiko of Hamburg, NJ; her sister: Anastasia Darrat and her husband Thomas of Hamburg, NJ; and her nephews: Stephen, Kevin, John and Thaddeus (Ted) Shiko; and dear family friend: Virginia Obertrifter.

Helene was preceded in death by her former husband, Leonard Burgess to whom she always remained close; her brother, Stephen Shiko and his wife Maryann; and her sister-in-law, Gloria Shiko.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will follow at 11:30 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Baker of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley.
