Ella Ann Eggenberger Obituary
Ella Ann (Holbert) Eggenberger, age 98, a lifelong resident of Greeley, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 75 years, Edward Lewis Eggenberger, in 2022.
Born May 10, 1928, in Lackawaxen, Ella was the daughter of the late Walter and Charlotte (Vollmer) Holbert.
Ella's life was defined by devotion to her family, hard work, and service to her community. While raising her children, she worked in a variety of occupations over the years, including serving as Postmaster of the Greeley Post Office. She was perhaps best known as the business manager of Tanglwood Ski Area and later Masthope Ski Area, where she worked side by side with her husband. Together, they helped shape the growth of the local ski industry and built a legacy that inspired generations of family members and friends.
For more than seven decades, Ella and Eddie shared a remarkable partnership rooted in love, perseverance, and mutual support. While Eddie often stood in the spotlight for his many accomplishments, those who knew them understood that Ella was the steady force behind the scenes, providing the encouragement, wisdom, and dedication that made so much possible. Their marriage was a testament to commitment, teamwork, and enduring love.
Above all else, Ella cherished her family. She took great pride in being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home was always a place of warmth and welcome, and her quiet strength, kindness, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
In addition to her husband, Ella was preceded in death by her son, Mark Eggenberger, in 1992; her brother, Donald Holbert; and her sister, Sylvia Dermody Roberts.
She is survived by two daughters: Dona Schmalzle and her husband, Ed, of Lords Valley, Pennsylvania, and Joy Schmalzle of Englewood, Florida; her grandchildren: Denise Brice and her husband, Gene, of Lords Valley, Alexander Schmalzle and his wife, Amanda, of Paupack, Edward Schmalzle and his wife, Sarah, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Mackenzie Schmalzle and his wife, Karen, of Duluth, Georgia; and her great-grandchildren: Briella, Kinzey, Sophia, Nevaeh, Benjamin, Theodore, Eva, and Eliza Jane, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
