Harold Allen Pace Obituary
Harold Allen Pace, age 94, of Hawley died peacefully at home on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Harold was born in the small town of Chadron, Nebraska, during challenging times, as the Midwest faced the Dust Bowl and the country suffered through the Great Depression. His father, Thomas Pace, worked on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway and as a part-time policeman to support his family. As soon as Harold was old enough, he worked odd jobs to help out.
Harold graduated from Chadron High School in 1950 in a class of 49 students. He was drafted into the US Army in 1952, where his duties primarily involved making truck deliveries. This early experience paved the way for his career; Harold went on to enjoy nearly 40 years as a professional truck driver, moving goods across the country. He loved sharing stories from the road. A favorite memory was navigating Donner Pass in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains during a treacherous snowstorm. He successfully maneuvered his tractor-trailer on a single plowed lane, surrounded by snow walls as high as his truck. Harold was incredibly proud of his decades of accident-free driving and received numerous safety awards.
Throughout his life, Harold was known for helping family and friends in need. His granddaughter remembers him as a teacher at heart, who happily showed others how to drive, weld, build carpentry projects, or solve mathematics problems. He was always willing to lend a hand.
Harold truly needed to work for his own well-being and continued doing so well into his 90s. It thrilled him to put on his work gloves, grab his cane, and head to the woodpile. There he assisted his son by running the wood splitter – moments the brought him his happiest days.
While Harold enjoyed many lifelong friendships, he sadly outlived many of his close friends in his later years. After living most of his life in the West, he moved East to live with family. They deeply cherish the years they spend with him and are incredibly thankful for that time. Losing their Dad is painful for Harold's family, but he will remain in their hearts forever.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 401 Church St., Hawley, PA 18428.
