Rev. H. Ross Pinkney, age 87, Garden Hill, Hawley died peacefully Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at home. Rev. Pinkney was born April 19, 1916 in Hawley, PA, and was the son of the late Robert P. and the late May (Roberts) Pinkney Field. He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Virginia (Thomas) Pinkney; son & daughter-in-law, Robert & Sylvia Pinkney of Hawley, PA; son & daughter-in-law, Craig & Patricia Pinkney of Ringwood, NJ; grandchildren, Craig, Jr., Kyle Ross, Damion and Nicole. He served in the Army during World War II where he earned a Bronze Star for his service with the 83rd Infantry while serving in France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. He completed many years of service as a Chaplin in the National Guard earning the rank of Lt. Col. Rev. Pinkney served as Assistant Pastor at Elm Park Methodist Church until 1951. From 1951 to 1978 he was Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Hackensack, NJ. He returned to his native Hawley in 1978 and was pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Hawley and Bethany Presbyterian until his eventual retirement in 1983. He was predeceased by a sister, Alma Pinkney Knight; a brother, Robert Pinkney and his stepfather, Jack Pop Field. Mr. Pinkney was a Life-member of Honesdale Lodge #218 Free & Accepted Masons, Honesdale, PA; Director Emeritus of Green Gates Cemtery Assoc., Hawley, PA; a former member of the Hawley Fire Dept and Fire Police; a member Wayne Co. Historical Society; Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary and an active supporter of The Ritz Company Playhouse in Hawley.
