Obituary of Helen K. Teeter

Helen K. Teeter of Hawley, died Sunday, January 22, 2006, one day after her 98th birthday, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale after a brief illness. Born in Paupack, PA, she was the daughter of the late James G. and Clarabel Pud (Kimble) Killam. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Teeter, in 1970.
A graduate of Hawley High School Class of 1925, she was the oldest living graduate of the Moses Taylor School of Nursing, Scranton, Class of 1929. In addition, she was believed to be the oldest actively licensed funeral director in Pennsylvania. She and her husband, Dick, owned and operated Teeters Furniture and Teeters Funeral Chapel until their sons assumed ownership in the late 1960s.
She was active with the PTA, American Red Cross and Girl Scouts many years ago. A 25-year breast cancer survivor, she had been active with the American Cancer Societys Reach to Recovery Program until her much later years. An Honorary Lifetime Member of the Wallenpaupack Historical Society, she was also Director Emeritus of the Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce and Green Gates Cemetery Association. Helen was an avid counted-cross stitcher and crossword puzzler who also loved fishing at Lake Teedyuskung.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Richard A. and Mary Anne Teeter and J. Kimble and Candace Teeter, all of Hawley, PA; a sister: Josephine McGall of Marietta, PA; four grandchildren: Mary Helen Schmalzle, Julie Seiler, Jen Peifer and Jake Teeter; three stepgrandchildren: Tracy Hintermister, Lori Dye and Addie Brennan; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen centered her life on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at TEETERS' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at TEETERS' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, with Rev. Martin L. Cox, Jr., Pastor of Hawley United Methodist Church, and Rev. William B. Healey, retired Pastor of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, officiating.
A Private Interment will take place in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley.
