George was a wonderful man to be around, esp. when we talked about drag racing history - We thoroughly enjoyed our time together at the York Reunion with George and Wally Bell and were hoping for more - George will be missed but he's now at the drag race in heaven.
Our prayers are with his family and friends,
Reed and Tangie

George was a customer at Gateway Ford in Tunkhannock when I worked there in the 90's. Used to tell stories of drag racing at Pocono drag Lodge in the 60's. Cool Guy! Those aren't clouds up there in heaven buddy-its tire smoke! RIP....

My sincere sympathy to all of the Whalen family and friends. I only came in contract with Mr. Whalen once in my life, as a child at The Pocono Drag Lodge when I did not have the money to buy one of his Hemi Dodge Funny Car pictures. He not only gave me one, he also autographed it and shook my hand. I have that picture to this day and have shared that special memory of a childhood hero with my now grown children.

I'll try again. My 'puter is rebeling.
In 1964 I went up to PDL with a coupe that I had no idea into which class it would fall . After inspection it was deternined to be H/G. When coming to the staging area I was told I could not run any Gas class without a leather jacket. George was talking to an official in the staging area and overheard the conversation and offered me his so I could run. I ended up beating two Ford flatheads and getting my 1st trophy. If not for George I'd have just gone home. It has always been one of my best and most often repeated memories of the '60's

I first met George at the Pocono Drag Lodge back in the 1960’s. He was one of the first professional level racers coming out of PDL. He was a fierce competitor and his cars were always first class. He became know as “The Rebel” but in all truthfulness he was more aptly an ivy leaguer. A few years ago I interview George for a video documentary chronicling PDL. I am glad we were able to document his story and include it our collection of historical drag racing videos. Rest in peace my friend and until we meet again.
