John Roethel, age 87, of Arden, Delaware, and formerly of Hawley, PA, and Glendale, Queens, NY, died Monday, May 18, 2009. Mr. Roethel was born January 19, 1922, in Gottschee, Austria, and was the son of the late Frank and Florence (Schaffer) Roethel. He was a carpenter and former member and treasurer of Beekeepers' Association and was a former member of the Palmyra-Wayne Planning Commission. He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Pauline (Eppich) Roethel; one daughter: Ericka Roethel Walker and her husband Clint of Wilmington, DE; and a granddaughter: Katie of Escondido, CA. He was predeceased by a son, Charles, and two brothers, Staff Sergeant Frank and Staff Sergeant Karl Roethel who were both decorated with the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Calling hours will be Monday, May 25, from 3 to 6 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 26, at 10:00AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, by Rev. Richard W. Beck, Pastor. Burial will be in B.V.M. Queen Of Peace Cemetery, Hawley. Memorial donations may be made to Gottscheer Relief Assn., 657 Fairview Ave., Ridgewood, NY 11385, or Compassionate Care Hospice, 702B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
