Obituary of Madelyn G. Ammon

Madelyn G. Ammon passed away June 15, 2009 at Bethany Village; having lived a wonderful, complete life of 99+ years. Madelyn was born on November 2, 1909. Her parents were the late Elwin and Wyrie Bortree Conklin of the Ledgeville, PA area. She was the last surviving of 5 children; Bob, Grover, Ruth and Gladys. Madelyn married Robert Ammon on September 30th, 1927 and bore a son Robert L. Ammon on June 2, 1942. Madelyn spent from 1927 to 1950 being a homemaker, mother and constant help to her husband Bob, the first superintendent at Lake Wallenpaupack. Madelyn also was an active member of the Eastern Star organization becoming a Worthy Matron in 1933. Moving to Hawley in 1950 becoming, active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church as a Willing Worker, Sunday school teacher and good friend to all who knew her. During the 60s and 70s she worked at the Sherman Mills to support her family and eventually became a nurses aide at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her passion was caring for the many mothers and babies of the area. She remained at Wayne Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1992. Madelyn then returned to her first love, the Big Lake, where she remained an independent, active woman until her 95th birthday. She is survived by her Robert, his wife Bonnie, and two grandchildren Robert, attending Tufts University in Boston and Leigh Ammon, a natural resources specialist in Fort Lauderdale, FL. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 18 at 11:00am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 405 Church St., Hawley with Rev. Joan Mitchell officiating, followed by a remembrance luncheon at the PPL EcoCenter at the dam on Lake Wallenpaupack. A private burial will follow. Donations in Madelyn's name can be sent to Hospice St. John or Wayne Memorial Hospital.
