Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen Marie Davis of Lakeville died Monday, May 31, at home following an illness. Born in Cherry Ridge, PA, on December 8, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Stuart Barrick and Edna Swingle Barrick. She grew up at the Clemo Hunting and Fishing Club where her parents were caretakers. Her husband was the late Clifton Davis who died in 1991.
Beginning in the 1950's she operated Davis' Store, a quaint general store that served local residents and visitors until 1972. Through the years she also worked as a restaurant hostess, cook and store clerk. She thoroughly enjoyed working with people and didn't retire until the age of 79.
Helen was a member of the Lakeville United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women (originally called the Ladies Aid Society), was involved in fund-raising for the Heart Association and the Cancer Society, a member of the Hemlock Hollow School Association and was an original member of the Lakeville Fire Company Auxiliary working with others on fundraising projects and providing refreshments for the firemen when needed. She was also a Republican Committee Woman.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking, watching NASCAR on television and visiting the Hawley Senior Center on Tuesdays to play bingo. In earlier years, she took great pride in her flower gardens and spent countless hours watching and identifying the many birds that visited her feeder. Talking on the phone or visiting with many friends gave her much enjoyment.
Surviving are three daughters, Nancy F. Davis of Lakeville, Katherine D. Kovachevich of Independence, MO, and Cynthia Chumard and her companion Blaise Pantuso of Jefferson Township; three sons, James C. Davis and his wife Sylvia of Lakeville, Richard S. Davis and his wife Carol of Honesdale and Scott A. Davis of Lakeville; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Oakley, and a grandson, Scott Bihler.
