John "Jack" P. Brown, 79, of Hawley died unexpectedly Friday, December 10, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, the former Patricia Ann Kelly, in 2001.
Born March 24, 1931, in Paterson, NJ, he was the only son of the late John A. and Kathryn Geisler Brown. He was a 1949 graduate of Hawley High School and a 1953 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science. He was veteran of the United States Army who served during the time of the Korean Conflict.
Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Brown's Pharmacy from 1962 to 2002. The original location of the pharmacy was in the Hawley Odd Fellows Building until 1962 when he purchased the former Hawley Bank building which was then being used as the Hawley Post Office.
Mr. Brown was a member of BVM Queen of Peace RC Church and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus Bishop Hoban Council and past Grand Knight. He was a lifelong member of the NRA and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association. He was one of the founding members of the Hawley Ambulance Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being a private pilot.
He is survived by five daughters: Patricia Ann McHugh and her husband Michael of East Stroudsburg, Margaret "Peggy" Frey of Bath, Bonnie Gumble and her husband Todd of Lake Ariel, Stephanie Brown of Hawley and Kathleen Johnson and her husband Thomas of Wind Gap; two sons: John and his wife Maureen and Christopher, all of Hawley; ten grandchildren: Michael, Katie, Jackie, Cole, Sean, Brianna, Ryan, Brooke, Harley, and Sage.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shaun Patrick McHugh. The Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 10:00 AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, with Rev. Irudaya Illuri, Assistant Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in B.V.M. Queen Of Peace Cemetery, Hawley.
Following the Mass the family invites friends and neighbors to join them at Torte Knox, Main and Keystone Sts., Hawley from 11:15 to 12:45.
