John James Mazzga, age 85, of Hawley died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, the former Shirley Waters, in 2007.
Born December 24, 1925, in Greenwich, CT, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Bukowski) Mazzga. During World War II, he served with the Army Engineers Construction Battalion. He served in the Occupation Force in Japan following World War II.
A Hawley resident since 1953, he was a dairy farmer who owned and operated Mazzga Acres Farm. For 22 years, he was also the driver of Bus 11 for the Wallenpaupack School District.
Mr. Mazzga was a 12-year member of the Wallenpaupack Area School Board, a Palmyra Township Supervisor for 20 years and also a 20-year member of the Wayne County Draft Board. He worked with the Wayne Co. Farm Bureau for over 50 years and served as its President for 20 years. In his later years, he enjoyed playing bingo at the Hawley Senior Center.
He is survived by three daughters: Nellie Plantier and her husband Craig of Stevens, PA, Betty Ling and her husband Joe of Gillett, PA, and Joyce Carson and her husband Bill of Hawley; four sons: John Jr. of Hammondsport, NY, Robert and his wife Lois of Ranier, OR, Richard of Lake Ariel and Thomas and his wife Lynne of Hawley; eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be Monday, May 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. There will be a Funeral Mass on Tuesday, May 3, at 11:00 AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, with Rev. Richard W. Beck, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
