How do we rate someone's life, well if i were to rate Tom Kennedy I would have given him 150% He was on the top,,,, they say your worth is by what you leave behind. He didn't leave just his family, he left thousands of previous students behind... he was a man I respected very much,He was my English Teacher, then later as my Principle... always fair and Kind, as i look back I do recall several times he would see me in the hall with a friend and ask why we weren't in class yet. then he'd smile and just walk away... several times i had been called to his office for one thing or another and he was always fair... looking back he just always wanted to make sure we learned from our mistakes... I also remember when I registered my son at WHAS I saw him after 20+ years and he still remembered me by name,,, that's how important each and everyone of us were to him... In my book he was number one... the world is now a darker place without him but heaven has a very bright angel watching over us

When I was in 4th grade, I was sent into the hall for the first, and thankfully last, time in my life. As I sat with tears brimming my eyes, I heard Mr. Kennedy heading down the hall toward me. Full of fear, I shrank to the smallest possible space I could physically occupy and braced for the worst.
As he came to a halt in front of me, he told made to stand, which couldn't have been much higher than his waist. Leaning down, he asked why I was in the hall. After giving my answer he smiled and said, "Did you learn your lesson?" I nodded and he told me to go back in the room.
I was never a frequent visitor to the office, but he knew me by name, as he did everyone. He had a gentle soul, and it showed through all of his actions. I don't believe a single student went through Wallenpaupack that he didn't leave a lasting impression with.
My heart is with you and your family, Mrs. Kennedy. May God ease your grief with memories of joy and a sense that you made the most of every moment.

I was saddened by the news of Mr. Kennedy's passing, as I read about it on the Internet in my apartment in Bowling Green, Ohio. I thought of the memories that I had with him; both at Wallenpaupack as a student, and as a Rotarian in Hawley, when he spoke at Settler's Inn about one of his many passions: The community. I will remember the times I had as a young boy, specifically, the Camp Watonka overnight experience as well as his leadership at Wallenpaupack in promoting education and encouraging students like myself to succeed and exceed expectations in the classroom. As a Rotarian in Hawley, I remembered the presentations he gave to the club about various community causes, local history and his participation in many ways towards making the area where I grew up, a better place. He will be missed by all who knew him and my condolences are to his family during this difficult time.

Tom was truly a gentleman in all aspects of life. I got to know him thru YMCA basketball and he was always respectful of everyone on the court. He also shared a passion for local history which he shared with us in a winter adult class. After such a class he showed us his vast train memorabilia which he had in his office.
His presence will be missed and may he find peace in Heaven and may the Lord comfort his wife and family. Today the world is sad, but his memory will brighten the days to come.

Someone once told me that you only meet a handful of people who will impact your own life. No doubt Mr. Kennedy was one of those very special people. As a student in third grade in the small Newfoundland Elementary School, Mr. Kennedy took the time to come out to recess to explain to me that I couldn't sell sun glasses to the other students. As a new teacher starting a career at WNIS, he didn't tell me how to be a professional, he led by example. After his retirement Mr. Kennedy became Tom or T.K. We shared so many wonderful conversations about school, family, and sports. He truly cared about my family and me. I will truly miss those special times. However, I'm blessed to have been part of his life. I can only hope that I can be half the person he was.
Thank you Mr. Kennedy, Tom, T.K. You will never be forgotten.

Dear Laura and Family,
The passing of Tom is no doubt a tragedy. His life however, is a victory that we can all celebrate. Tom made a lasting impression on me personally. He taught me many things relating to education, leadership, sport, and history. Most of all he taught me that what really matters are the people who you surround yourself with on a daily basis. Tom always spoke so lovingly of his own family and was always willing to take the time to be interested in mine. His interest and love of others reflects who Tom was, a great man who genuinely cared for our students, our staff, and our community as a whole. Tom can rest assured that those he inspired will always work to carry on his legacy of hard work, dedication, and love of school and community.
Rest in peace my friend, your work is done here and will never be forgotten.

To the family of Mr. Kennedy,
I am a junior at Valley View, and I was given the opportunity to help create the Historical Society's local history game show. When I arrived at the Catlin house recently, I was welcomed by a small group of intelligent, welcoming individuals. It was then that I met Mr. Kennedy, who insisted I call him Tom. I soon got the warm, welcoming feeling that this man loved his job and loved to share his knowledge with those around him. He left such an impression on me and taught me so much in such a short span of time (partially because he was getting hungry) that I could not wait to go back in February. I would have talked to Tom for hours if I could have. Although I was devastated when I learned of his passing, I was overwhelmed with gratitude that I was lucky enough to meet him at least once. Tom was an incredible individual with a talent for teaching and a contagious passion for history. I am glad I was blessed with meeting Tom even if it was just once.

I have had the honor to know Tom for many, many years. He has been my principal, teacher, mentor, friend, fellow board member, and all around go to guy. Many have written about his devotion to his family and I saw that as his first priority. He also held the families of his staff a priority and encouraged and supported us to do the same.
As a fellow board member of the Hawley Library and now its president, I have seen Tom in action as a strong supporter of the community. He was passionate about providing library services to our patrons as well as supporting our staff in their roles. He worked with the board to make our library the "hub" of the community. We value his tireless work to preserve the Gravity Railroad Passenger Car. His passing is a tremendous loss to our library and community.
May the support of the community bring strength and comfort to the entire Kennedy Family.

These past few days have brought me to a true understanding of just how important Tom has been to me both personally and professionally. Having been his Head Teacher for the final 5 years of his career I came away from that time enriched with principles and work ethic drawn from his example. He was forever the mentor. Countless are the lessons I learned from Tom, but I share a few of his most notable bits of advice. “Lead from the front. Always be visible, show that you care and model the conduct you expect from others.” “Always hear them out. Listen to all sides. But in the end, you must do what you believe is right. If you do this, you’ll always be able to sleep at night.” “Be guilty of Co-mission rather than O-mission.” So, I offer my condolences to the Kennedy family: May your thoughts always go to the happy times you shared with this great man. Tom, we will miss your mentoring; we will never forget how you led by example and we will see you again one day across the Rubicon.

I would like to start off by saying Thomas H. Kennedy was a gentleman who brought great pride to Wallenpaupack. He was supportive to staff and was a respected principal. I appreciate all he did for the district and all he did for me. I am today a staff member on the custodial staff at the Wallenpaupack middle school. I first started at Wallenpaupack school district as summer help. After graduation I didn't know where I was headed for a career until I came to Wallenpaupack, and got to know Thomas H. Kennedy. He made an impact on my life by making me part of his world of learning. He was a mentor and a person with great knowledge; he taught me how to be disciplined and strong. I appreciated him for that very much. As for his wife Laura and his two lovely daughters and their son they made an impact on my life as well. I considered Thomas H. Kennedy family to me.
Rest in peace my dear friend and let God be with you always!!!

I’ve put this off – finding it difficult to find the words. This is such a profound personal loss for the Kennedy family and you have all been in our hearts and prayers. Tom always spoke so lovingly of you – clearly his pride and joy. But he also showed a genuine interest in the families and circumstances of others. He sincerely cared. He was a man of integrity who always took the high road. As a principal, he ran a tight ship – demanding excellence from his staff but never expecting any less from himself. In the 30 years we worked together, there was never ever a time when the students weren’t his priority. Tom’s goal was always to act in their best interest - not only academically but socially and emotionally. He cared. There was never any doubt about that. I join the many friends and colleagues, former students and staff members, who will miss the physical presence of Tom Kennedy. But I give thanks for his life, his example, and the wonderful legacy he leaves behind.

From the time I was fortunate to begin working under his tutelage, I knew that indeed I had a supervisor who cared not only for his school, his community, and his family, but for my family and me.
So many people have commented that Tom expected the best from his faculty and staff. He certainly did! In expecting only the best, we knew it was our only option! My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. This community will as I am sure your family will, Treasure the Memories of this very special man.Tom was truly an outstanding educator with a genuine commitment to well being of the students and teachers of his school. He also had an incredible love and extensive knowledge of local and regional history which he shared not only with other educators but also with the wider community. His civic outreach was extensive, but I remember him most for his love of basketball. Tom understood the game and how it was played better than most basketball people in the region and he knew even more about the college game. I enjoyed the few times I had the chance to talk with him about the Big East games and also March Madness. Basketball brought us closer together as he coached the JVs and helped us on the varsity team. It was the spring of 1969 when I first met Laura. Tom and Laura were walking hand-in-hand through the Sears store in Viewmont Mall and Tom was very gracious as he introduced you to me. Mr. Kennedy’s involvement in the community reaches far beyond any written words can express. Many have benefited from his knowledge of local history and his continued interest in education. Things that I will remember include how willing he was to speak to prospective educators at ESU on several occasions, how people loved listening to his guided tours of the PPL Dam and Power Plant during Wally Lake Fest, how when he volunteered at the Hawley Library 5K, he would let the runners know what place they were in as they passed by (counting each runner) and how he could often be seen courtside at many a basketball game encouraging players. I remember the time the Junior High basketball team was practicing in the Intermediate gym. I took a crazy shot as Mr. Kennedy was walking passed the entrance. He asked the coach if he could speak with me out in the hallway and talked to me about the importance of practice and how it relates to the way we play in the game. Of course I was embarrassed, but looking back on that moment, I appreciate the time he took to offer advice. The school day was done but that didn't matter to him. He really cared about each kid that walked through the doors.
He has left a big impact on thousands of people, and I want to thank Mr. Kennedy for his time. I was lucky to have known you. Hoping these difficult times will be easier on the family after seeing the outpouring of respect and love people had for him. Take care.

many thoughts come to mind. Gentlemen for starters, then kind,
generous, thoughtful, community minded, and just an out right great
guy! Of all the customers I see in our store, Tom was always the most
cheerful person I would chat with from time to time. That's a long cry from
those days as a little 5th grader in the Hawley Elementary School when Tom
first became the Principal there. He was a true educator and he practiced that
everyday of his life! From some reason this loss almost feels personal, our hearts

I was lucky enough to have worked for Tom for 7 years. He was "the boss" and wanted the best from his employees to make WNIS the best it could be. He was successful in getting the best from us all. We respected him and wanted to perform as best we could and make him proud. He always had our back, supporting his staff through thick and thin. When it came to Tom on a personal level, it was always FAMILY FIRST. Tom was the first phone call or visitor his staff members would receive if facing a difficult time. He'd let us know if there was anything he could do to help, he would and he did. He really walked the walk.
To the entire Kennedy family - I am so sorry for your loss. He loved you all so much. I want to add how appropriate that his viewing is being held at WNIS. After all, it is the House that TK Built.

Dear Laura and Family,
We are so very saddened by this tragic news. Tom has been such a fixture in our lives and the community that it is impossible to imagine us going through life without seeing him at so many events. Just having seen him at the Alumni Basketball Game 2 weeks ago makes this so much more unreal to us . He was always a great supporter of Spencer and allowing him to use his special basketball to shoot hoops in the intermediate gym after school for so many years is a memory we cherish. And of course we believe that his helping Spencer with his shot paid off in later years!
He was taken much much too soon. He lived life with passion for the community, his family. his railroads, our local history, children and our schools, and so many other groups he volunteered for and helped. I'm afraid we'll not see anyone like him for a very very long time. He has big shoes to fill and he's left a hole in our all of our hearts.
We are sending you our love and support, Ed & Sheila

Once again the sky has darkened over the "historic counties" in the northern tier. The area has lost one of best local historians we have ever had. I had the pleasure of traveling both the north and south legs of Mr. Tom Kennedy's Ambassador Tours and will forever remember the experience. I think that Mr. Kennedy actually liked trains even more than I do. Never in my 53 years of life have I learned so much in one day. I admired his amazing ability to recite without notes, historical facts from the Northern tip of Wayne County to the Eastern border of Pike county. Not only did he have the knowledge, but his generosity in sharing his gift with so many will ripple through generations to come. A legacy that will be hard to match. God Bless you Mr. Kennedy, Rest in Peace, my friend.
