Obituary of Raymond R. Hoagland

Raymond Robert Hoagland, age 82, of Hawley died Sunday, November 13, 2016 peacefully at home surrounded by family after a long illness. Ray was born January 7, 1934, in Princeton, NJ and was raised on a small family farm in Griggstown, NJ. He was the son of the late Raymond Sigourney and Esther Roxene (Sanger) Hoagland. In addition to his parents Raymond was predeceased by his siblings, Phyllis Weingart, Kenneth Hoagland, Esther Robbins. Ray graduated from Princeton High School, where he met his wife in tenth grade. Married in 1954, he and his wife Cynthia lived in Griggstown until 1978. They then moved to Pittstown where they had a small farm. He worked for PKF in Newtown, PA. for the last 25 years before his retirement. Raymond was an original carpenter with PKF when the company was founded in 1969. He became a foreman and later the Superintendent and was a lifetime member of the Princeton Local of the New Jersey Carpenters' Union before retiring to Lake Wallenpaupack 23 years ago. Raymond loved to lend a helping hand and made a mean lasagna and he especially enjoyed making pancakes for his family. After many attempts, nobody has been able to make them as delicious as Pop Pop. He was a Boy Scout leader, was active with AWANA Kids Club at Cole Memorial Baptist Church in Hawley and Tabernacle Church in Honesdale. He ran marathons, loved hiking, skiing, fishing, and was an avid dirt track racing enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He and his wife Cynthia spent their winters in Sebastian, FL. He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Cynthia Frances (Duncan) Hoagland; two daughters: Diane Hoagland Sweet of Archbald, PA, and Melissa Semcer of Tewksbury, NJ; two sons: Raymond Hoagland of East Stroudsburg, PA, and Curtis and his wife Liz Hoagland of Menomonie, WI; six grandchildren: Jacob Hoagland; Isaac Hoagland; Lauren Dillinger; Trey Semcer; Carly Semcer; and Kiera Semcer. Calling hours will be Friday, November 18th from 11 AM to noon at Honesdale Tabernacle, 455 Grove St, Honesdale, PA, followed by the funeral service at noon. Burial will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery, Rocky Hill, NJ on Saturday, November 19th, at 1 PM. Memorials may be made to Honesdale Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove St, Honesdale, PA 18431
