Obituary of Walter F. Barnes

Walter F. Barnes, age 81, of Hawley died surrounded by his loving family on Friday, November 25, 2016, at Geisinger-Community Medical Center, Scranton. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gail P. (Connolly) Barnes.
Born April 16, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late William F. and Marie (Elliott) Barnes. He served as a paratrooper in the Army 101st Airborne Division. He worked as a truck driver and retired from Consolidated Freightways in 1995.
Walter loved playing softball and back in his Brooklyn neighborhood, he was known as "Legend of East 5th Street Park," but others knew him as "Jumper," "Pop," or "Barnesy."Regardless of what he was called, he was well-loved by all who knew him.
A 40-year Hawley resident, Walter was a member of BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Hawley, the Teamsters Union, Honesdale VFW and the Thursday Night Dart League.
He is survived by his wife: Gail P. (Connolly) Barnes; four daughters: Laurie Barnes-Soriano of Prompton, Stacey J. Barnes-Smith of Hawley, Courtney M. Barnes of Hawley, and Amanda L. Barnes-Sickler of Lake Ariel; two sons: William F. Barnes of Hawley and Walter F. Barnes Jr. of Harrisburg; and ten grandchildren: Brittnay, Vincent, Skylar, Connor, Erik, Patrick, Ireland, Bryleigh, Skylar James and Felicity.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William Barnes and two sisters, Mary Peterson and Theresa Carlson.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, November 29, from 6 to 9 PM and Wednesday, November 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 1, at 10:00 AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, celebrated by Rev. Richard W. Beck, Pastor. Burial will follow in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley.
