Charles Daniel "Dan" Gelderman, age 57, a lifelong resident of Hawley died following an illness Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. He was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Sandra L. Gibbs Gelderman, in 2016. Born February 13, 1960, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles William and Patricia Milzie (DeGroat) Gelderman. He attended Wallenpaupack Area High School. Prior to his retirement, he was a truck driver for Waste Management for 27 years. Dan was a member of Waymart Church, Waymart. He and his late wife Sandra had volunteered with the Eagle Institute in Narrowsburg. He enjoyed hunting with his brother Richard as well as fishing and gun collecting. He also liked to ride his Harley and in his Corvette, as well as attending concerts. A talented cook, won the 2009 Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce Chili-Wing Cook-Off with "Dan's Smokehouse Wings" and was also awarded First Place for Wings in the 2012 Cast Iron Chef Cook-Off sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary in Gouldsboro. A kind and generous soul, he most loved his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He often said, "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met." He is survived by his stepdaughter: LuAnn VanOrden and her fiancé Ed Mowery of Shillington, PA; his grandchildren: Mackenzie VanOrden, Jeremiah VanOrden, Bryce Mowery, Kiara Mowery and Skyler Gray; two brothers: David Gelderman and his wife Tammy of Boone, NC, and Richard Gelderman and his wife Laura of Hawley; two sisters: Nancy Armstrong and her husband Joel of Butler, TN, and Martha Birtel and her husband Shawn of Hawley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Jennifer VanOrden Gray. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 26, from 6-8 PM at Teeters' Funeral Chapel, 505 Church St., Hawley. The funeral will be Saturday, May 27 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Sal Maiorana of the Waymart Church officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Lake Ariel.
