Obituary of John Christopher Ryan

John Christopher Ryan, age 65, of Hawley died unexpectedly Friday, May 19, 2017 at home. He is survived by his daughter Colleen Bisig, son John Ryan, partner Kathleen McKean, grandchildren Ryan, Erin and Madeline. Born October 19, 1951 in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Crystal Johst Ryan. After his parents died in his early teens, John was raised by his aunt and uncle, Mary and Dominick Scudera, and his cousins, Maureen, Gene, Karen, Andrew, Gloria, and Steven, who became his brothers and sisters. After serving with the NYPD for 42 years, he retired as a Detective First Grade in 2012. Formerly of Staten Island, he moved to the Poconos full-time and fulfilled his life long dream of living on a dirt road by the river. John was a member of the Detective Endowment Association of the City of New York, the Staten Island Ski Club, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Honesdale. One of his proudest accomplishments was becoming an Adirondack 46er, summiting all 46 High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. He took tremendous pride in his family and community, coaching sports teams, volunteering, and instilling his values of hard work and responsibility. John loved life, loved his friends, loved his family and without question loved a good cold German beer. Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will be Thursday, May 25, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
