Obituary of Eleanor A. Heacock
Eleanor A. Heacock of Hawley passed away at Dunmore Health Care Center on Saturday, October 6, 2018, following an illness. She was 87 years young. She was born in Pennsburg, PA and lived there until she moved to Hawley 20 years ago. She was a graduate of the local high school and earned a B.S. in Education from Kutztown State College. She was a dedicated 4th grade teacher for more than 30 years in the Franconia Township and Souderton Area School Districts until her retirement.
She was an active sports enthusiast in her youth, playing field hockey, basketball and softball. She held left field position on a State Championship-winning softball team as an adult.
Her memberships included the Hawley Public Library, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and Paupack United Methodist Church where she sang with the Thursday Night Singers and took special interest in the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and Pre-school.
Other interests included American pottery, New England basketry, bird-watching, flowers and a bit of golf.
She had a life-long love affair with books and an impressive personal library. Her favorite reads dealt with Egyptian culture, English royalty, history and mystery. She was an avid fan of John Wayne movies and women's tennis. Her one frivolous indulgence in later years was reading the gossip magazines.
Eleanor was a world traveler and the "family shutterbug," leaving a substantial heritage of photos. The coastal regions of Maine and Chincoteauge Island, VA, however were her favorite vacation destinations.
She was a beloved sister, cherished aunt, devoted daughter and loving caretaker to her mother until her passing in 1997.
Predeceased family members include her parents, Oscar and Blanche Heacock, and a niece, Earlaine Coulter, as well as her treasured friend, Sally Brown.
Survivors are a sister, Elaine Unger; nephews, Scott and John Unger of Paupack; a niece, Susan Yerke and family of Lock Haven; and a niece, Eleanor Vaughan and family of Corning, NY.
Following cremation, a Celebration of Life service will be held at Paupack United Methodist Church with Pastor Anthony Schwartz officiating on Saturday, October 20, at 11 AM.
Memorials may be made to Hawley Public Library, 103 Main Ave., Hawley, PA 18428 or Paupack United Methodist Church, 579 Route 507, Paupack, PA 18451.
