Obituary of Derek J. Matthys

Derek J. Matthys, age 33, of Milanviille died unexpectedly, Friday, January 4, 2019 at Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM.

Mr. Matthys was born May 6, 1985 in Bethesda, MD and was the son of James G. Matthys and Sandra (Kelsey) McDevitt.

He was employed by Prime, Inc as a truck driver.

Derek attended Cole Memorial Baptist Church and recently Wallenpaupack Church.  He worked on computers and motorcycles and enjoyed fishing, playing video games, composing music and studying quantum physics.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years: Kristina (Cruz) Matthys; one daughter: Riley Matthys; two sons: Joshua Matthys and Phoenix Matthys; his father: James G. Matthys of Sarasota, FL; his mother and step-father: Sandra and Matthew McDevitt of Honesdale; four brothers: Patrick McDevitt of Honesdale, Preston McDevitt of Honesdale, Joseph McDevitt  and his wife Sydney of West Pittston, and Daniel McDevitt and his wife Kaleigh of Hawley;  his sister:  Krystal Cruz and her companion Tommy Ehrlich of Bethlehem; his father-in-law and mother-in-law:  Reynaldo and Erik Cruz of Hawley; maternal grandparents:  Reyanaldo and Anna Cruz of Honesdale; his aunt and uncle:  Eve and Lawrence Romanelli of Liberty, MO; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 15th from 9:30 to 11 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11 AM with Rev. Ken Platt of the Wallenpaupack Church officiating.

Cremation will be at Lake Region Crematory in Lake Ariel, PA.
