I am very sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Herb Hirsch. Professor Hirsch (“Herb” to me) was my professor, counselor and mentor when I studied political science (aka government) at the University of Texas during the turbulent years of 1969-72.
Herb was never afraid to call BS. He was never afraid to share his opinion. Always paramount to Herb was forcing his students to expand their perspectives. He was always one willing to enter into a colloquy (DEBATE) with a student right in the midst of one of his lectures.
He influenced the man I am today!

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Hirsch. I corresponded with him over a number of years and his encouragement and kindness to me will always be remembered.
The last email I received from Professor Herb was to inform me that he was stepping away for a time from the journal GSI because of ill health, but that my latest article would continue to go through the process of publication.
I have tonight accessed that journal online for the first time to read Herb's always insightful introduction to the journal, before I did so I also looked at the dedication.
I am truly sad and upset by learning of this news and I extend my belated sympathies to his friends, colleagues and family. He was a wonderful scholar and fine gentleman.
I will greatly regret that I did not get to meet or interview him.
I feel privileged to have corresponded with him over the last five years and for my articles to have been published in a journal so closely associated with Herb.
Sincerely,
Adam Hughes Henry

My family and prayers are with you all at this time. The State of Virginia appreciates the long devoted and dedicated work Professor Hirsch gave to the VCU community and Virginia as a whole.
