Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Barbara Boogertman, age 55, of Hawley passed away peacefullly at home Wednesday, November 16, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara was born October 13,1967, in Paterson, NJ, and was the daughter of Roger Campbell and Marilyn Ann (Dekorte) Gardenier of Midland Park, NJ. Barbara had many passions. She was most proud of her work with children. Early in her life, she worked at the Early Childhood Learning Center in Midland Park and Wyckoff, New Jersey. She later obtained a degree in early childhood development and continued to shape the minds of young children by opening a daycare from her home in Hawley, Pennsylvania, where she continued to care for children for almost 30 years. In addition to her love for children, Barbara cared deeply for animals, including her beloved dogs. She enjoyed spending many of her birthdays at the zoo with her family and continuously volunteered at Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale, Pennsylvania with her youngest daughter. Barbara’s volunteer work was felt by many in the community and even around the world. She was an auxiliary member of the Lakeville Fire Company, where both her husband and son are volunteer firefighters. Additionally, she was a youth group leader and Sunday school instructor at the Hawley United Methodist Church. Her service with the church extended all the way to Honduras, where she actively participated in two mission trips for the underprivileged. Barbara always expressed how she wanted to be an artist. She frequently drew illustrations and painted at home and took pride in painting her husband’s demolition derby cars early on in their relationship. At the time of her death, she was working on a children’s book featuring illustrations of her family’s dog, Turbo. Much of Barbara’s time was spent outdoors and being active. She enjoyed hiking, kayaking and kickboxing with friends and family, and dancing with her husband, Dave. You could frequently find Barbara shopping for shoes and handbags with her daughters. Of all Barbara’s passions, her deepest was being a mom. This is what she was best at. She is survived by her husband of 34 years: David J Boogertman; two daughters and sons-in law: Alexa and Joseph Bias of Hawley and Lindsay and James Zipperlen of Hawley; one son, Jacob Boogertman of Hawley; one granddaughter: Olivia Zipperlen; her parents: Roger and Marilyn Gardenier of Midland Park, NJ; one sister and brother-in-law: Karen and Richard VanDerWall of Turin, NY; two brothers: John and his wife Christine Gardenier of Wantage, NJ, and Kevin Gardenier of Grand Rapids, MI. She was beloved by many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Saturday, November 26th from 9 am to noon at Hawley United Methodist Church, 315 Church St., Hawley, PA, followed by the funeral service at noon with Pastor Michelle Whitlock officiating. In addition, Barbara’s family will be planning a celebration of life in Spring 2023, pursuant to her wishes. Memorial contributions may be made to Hawley United Methodist Church, 315 Church St., Hawley, PA 18428 or Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Rd, Honesdale, PA 18431.
