I’d like to share some memories of Lou:
First from our mutual friend, Pauline Glykokokalos. She wrote:
"I loved him from the moment I met him. He was what the Jews call a "mensch", a really good man who you just love to be with.
He was always fun, always saw the glass half full, loved to have a good time and was so incredibly generous (as is Fran of course) with his time, talent and money.
He would call and offer help with Wayne County Art Alliance projects before I even had to ask. For last year’s Halloween Bash, he spent a few hours transporting 3 truckloads of decorations from storage to the cooperage and didn’t even want to be thanked. That was Louis. He also donated toward the event’s cost. So kind, thoughtful and generous. That happened many times for various projects over the years.
Another thing I admired, was his experience in the food industry. Liz, Xenia and I are all foodies and we loved to talk about food, its preparation at the home and for the public. He knew so much and was always willing to share thoughts about recipes, food trends etc. He was just so interesting to talk to.
And he was always excited about his latest project, whether that was being the best Santa, which he was, complete with that amazing beard he grew last year, or restoring the Holbert house with help especially from his daughter Jean.
It is now so elegant and beautiful.
He really liked being a grandfather.
He had a great sense of humor.
He could connect with young people as easily as oldsters.
Honesdale is less brilliant without him. He really cared about this community, its growth and prosperity."
My oldest memory of Lou is him mowing grass at what we now call the D & H Canal Park at Lock 31 on Rt. 6, west of Hawley. When Wayne County Historical Society was able to purchase the former Selberg property with a state grant and hire a historic architect, the architect’s first words of advice were, “keep the grass cut around the house to deter vandalism” He knew it would take years to fund and make the house looked cared for. Fran was on the historical society’s board then, and before long Lou became a volunter, with his dark wrap-around sun glasses, a big guy sitting for hours mowing on his little yellow and white Cub Cadet, I think it was.
In 2010, my husband and I downsized to 51 Charles Street, White Mills and an older maroon GMC pick-up would go down the road early most mornings, usually before I was out the door to walk the dogs. When we started working on restoring #7 glass worker’s house next door, Lou would stop, chat, compliment and give encouragement. We then knew, he was the driver of that distinctive pick up and appreciated our efforts to improve the neighborhood.
So, when he was doing the same at the Holbert property, I stopped multiple times to help him figure out what was original with the help of photos from the historical society. Or I was updated when we would meet at the adult toy store, Home Depot. The last time I say him was on January 26th when he was proudly giving me the grand tour of its 4 apartments, which ready to be furnished.
On last memory. This past Jan 3rd, we finally had Fran & Lou over for my husband’s fresh salmon dinner. Olive oils were a topic of conversation. Not long after, Fran went into the city for work and one morning on his way down Charles Street, Lou delivering a bottle of Partanno, the best olive oil they recommended. We will miss not having more dinners with them both.

I didn't know Louis that well, but would talk to him when he came into Home Depot telling me about all the things he was doing to the Holbert home restoring it and showing me photos of it and I would get to see it as I went to and from work. I first saw him when I went to buy a Christmas tree from his daughter and son in laws tree farm on the property he was restoring! He was a great man who will be sadly missed!

In remembering the last time I spoke with Louis I recall how he expressed his pride and happiness for his children and the spouses they had chosen. He very enthusiastically said how much he enjoyed the time he spent with all of you. The family has grown since then, but the pictures tell how much he loved being with his grandchildren. He will be missed by all! Peter, Nicole, Danielle, Gabrielle and I will be with you online and in spirit as you celebrate his life.

I only knew Lou the last few years but found him to be a thoroughly enjoyable person to be around. He was always open to others' views without necessarily compromising his own. He also exhibited a great understanding of how the world really works and he was generous in compensating those he consulted. My son and I both admired him.
