I only recently heard of my "Cousin-in-law" Steve's passing. I was trying to contact him to get him to attend our upcoming 50 year HS reunion. I sat with him at our previous reunions and split my sides laughing. My Google search of his contact info revealed his obituary instead. I was shocked and very sad.
In addition to HS, we also attended St. John's grade school together. I will forever remember the time he and I dissected a frog for the rest of the class. I can't mention all that happened, but it was indeed memorable. :-)
Beverly, Sarah and Samantha: I am very sorry for your loss.
Kindest regards,
Joe Carbonaro

Sold my Pocono place to Steve and his family.
What an incredibly delightful and thoughtful man with whom I spent many hours talking about life in general and sharing our very diverse political views. Sad that his life ended so young and that I didn't get to spend more time enjoying his energy, inspiration, kindness. Rest in peace my friend.

Steve had recently found the following poem which deeply moved him. It was in a box which included old letters and photos from his Mom Edwina Sassi.

Just a few months ago, I drove up to Arcade for work and remembered the Summer we all met for the reunion at Jackie’s. I think fondly on how we all bonded over the fresh outdoor air, great food, and wonderful stories. Steve, you always treated everyone with kindness and respect. All of us sorely miss you.

We were all deeply saddened at the news of Steve's untimely passing at 66. Steven J Sassi & I were first cousins; my sisters are Kathy & Nancy Wydner. Our Mom & Steve's Mom were sisters - 'Effie' short for Ethlyn & 'Eddie' short for Edwina. We spent almost every Thanksgiving & Easter together growing up through high school whether it was at our parents’ home in Newton, NJ or his in Fishkill, NY. Steve loved life & always had a great appetite. He loved to eat both wings from the Thanksgiving turkey plus all the fixings & dessert! Steve's Mom generously baked the best lemon, orange, or strawberry cakes to complement our Mom's apple pies. Steve spoke about the amazing cinnamon rolls Grandma Altmann made in Arcade that were "out of this world" delicious. He would retell the story from when he was very young smelling them as he approached Grandma's house. We have a great memories from time with Steve & his parents. Our moms reminisced about their days growing up on the farm in Arcade, NY & walking miles to the bus in all kinds of weather including blizzards & our dads shared stories of past hard times as they too were from the 'Greatest Generation.' I will remember Steve when I see wild violets in the grass in early spring & stunning colorful roses in summer. Steve’s father Frank would point them out to us as well as the beautiful roses he cared for dependably at his home. We have some of those beautiful white & purple violets still growing that were descended from the ones he gave us at our old house growing up! Steve also loved when he visited family in the little town of Arcade, the farm, & was very nostalgic about riding the Arcade & Attics Railroad. Steve was conscientious about calling on holidays & keeping in touch. Steve had a long-time love of animals that my sisters & I remember from his pet raccoon Little Guy to his big GSD & then his tiny pup in more recent years. He loved nature & the town he retired to with his family. It reminded him of life from the days of Norman Rockwell. Steve also used to like to hunt, but more recently he enjoyed feeding the deer & wild turkeys rather than hunting them, & watching pairs of foxes outside his house. Steve was a good man & most of all he dearly loved his family. He especially adored his daughters. Steve also had a saving faith in Jesus Christ & grew closer to God in his later years in life. I will miss Steve's sense of humor & the conversations we shared about faith, family, dogs, our ancestry, & our country. We will miss you Steve & I am so glad my adult children Adriana, Joey, & Daniel got to hang out a bit with you & Beverly, Sarah, & Samantha at Jackie's for the family reunion in June 16, 2018. Who would know that less than 5 years later, you would be gone. Until we meet again Steve in heaven - I know you are in the presence of the King of the Universe Jesus Christ & some of those you dearly loved. My deepest sympathies to Steve's family & friends in his loss. Sincerely, Karen Wydner Santoro & family

Some favorite pics follow - of Steve at 11 years of age with pet bird on his head & pet rabbit "Judy" June 1968 at home, Steve from his high school graduation, later years with Eddie & Frank & beloved girls, the tiny dog he loved so much, the violets from Steve's Dad, pics of some of the Altmann women from days on the farm- Eddie & Effie on either side of Grandma with Barb & Karrie, then Effie & Eddie, all the girls with Grandma (with Georgine & Gertrude) minus Karrie, & last Effie in the car & Eddie on the trike.

My cousin Steven was a wonderful person who I admired very much! Although the years have kept us apart, my childhood memories with him will always be close to my heart. His sense of humor, infectious laugh, and beautiful smile were his trademarks. I was 8 years younger than him so he was a great role model for me to look up to. His parents, my mom Ethlyn’s sister Eddie and her husband Frank, always came down for Thanksgiving each year and on occasion, Steven would accompany them. I was always so excited when I learned this and the day was so much more fun when he was there! He would tell jokes and keep us laughing. His favorite trick was pulling at my nose and pretending he “got it”, presenting it in his fist by just letting the tip of his thumb show through his clenched fingers. He always kept you on your toes! It was so kind of him to keep me included as I was the youngest of the group by several years. I remember visiting his family in Fishkill, NY in their beautiful home. They all loved nature so much and Stephen took it over the top with his animal and hunting stories. He loved to entertain us! And of course, the topper was when he took us to view his raccoons in their pens outside in the yard. To little me, Steven was a star! He had everything going for him and was such a joy to be around! Even though I have been so far away from him since I settled in Colorado, I will miss him being on this earth with us. He was one of the special people in my life. Rest in peace, Steven, you will be missed.

We miss you Steve. I am Karen's son. I remember seeing Steve at a family reunion at Jackie's house in Arcade NY, near where my grandma grew up in the summer 2018. We all had a big barbecue, and even rode in the ATV out on the property. It was a great experience and we all had a enjoyable time together. Deepest condolences for your loss Bev and family.

So glad to see you Steven and your family at the gathering at Jackie's home in Arcade, NY on June 16, 2018. I will always remember you using the word "Darling." Your Mom used it many times and I am sure you picked that up from your beautiful Mom.
Love forever,

My family and I are so sorry for your loss. I'm one of Steve's first cousins - my mom and his mom were sisters. My sisters and I loved when Steve and his parents, our Aunt Eddie and Uncle Frank, came down to Newton, NJ to visit us for the day on holidays such as Thanksgiving! Steve was 4 years older than me and he was just so funny and fun to be with - we really admired him! We remember him teasing us in the most fun ways as we watched typical classic movies shown on TV at Thanksgiving such as King Kong! We enjoyed our visits to his home as well, and especially remember the days when we got to see his pet raccoon, "Little Guy". I will always remember the mischievous sparkle in Steve's eyes and his great sense of humor which made my family and I laugh. Wishing Steve - and his mom and dad who went on to heaven before him - all the joy that is possible for eternity!
With love and prayers,
Kathy Wydner Kawalec & family

I knew Steve from Procare/Pivot physical therapy. He and I were both on their maintenance program and would chat while exercising. He always had a positive outlook and a smile on his face. It was a pleasure to have known him. I am sad and miss him.

Steve Sassi...where do I begin? The Sassi's were our neighbors across the street on Cherrywood Dr. He and Beverly had two beautiful little girls, whom I adored as they became the side kicks to my daughter Mia. They became besties for years and were over house as much as their own. So naturally we became friendly with them and enjoyed their company many times.
What memories come to mind is Steve and Bev's pottie mouths when it came to certain topics of discussion. The _ bombs were flying... It would just make us laugh :)
So when they moved away to PA it was bit sad to see them go. We visited their new home once and beautiful it was... Sadly the distance kept us away and more sadly is that the girls who were inseparable in grade school, have now moved on to new lives. And I do hope that they can still keep in touch now and again. They left a great impression on us, those two kids...
Back to Steven. Yes Steve was a Hunter, so we kind of had that in common, though we never went hunting together. I had hoped that one day we would have hunted on his Property in PA. Sadly we that can't happen now :(
Well, Its been a number of years since the Sassi's have been away now but they left us with some pretty cool Neighbors, The Rowley's which their kids have brought back the memories of little Sarah and Sam. The parents are great peeps too. :)
We'll miss you Steve coming back now and again to check in on Ol' Pop's House. I hope that maybe we will still get to see you Bev, Sarah and Sam to check on pop's house or just call to visit. It would be nice to see you again. Oh and hey Bev... Nice Pants ;)

I’m so sorry to hear of Steven’s death. I was a cousin of Steven. His mom Effie and my mom were sisters. We lived down in Newnan, Ga., maybe 40 miles south of Atlanta. I would see Steven in the summer when my parents would visit. I remember all the times Steven and would play together and have great times. We both loved music and would listen to music..
May God rest Steven’s soul.
God Bless
