Obituary of Richard Carl Martin

Richard Carl Martin, age 90, of Blooming Grove, Tafton, died Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at ShorePoint Health, Port Charlotte, FL He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beatrice A. (Coutts) Martin. Born January 11, 1934, in Honesdale, Richard was the son of the late Carl Gustav and Hilda Caroline (Singer) Martin. He was a lifelong resident of Blooming Grove. Richard was a man of many talents and interests. He earned his pilot's license at the age of 16. While serving in the Army he was trained as a helicopter mechanic but ended up working on fixed-wing aircraft because of his flying experience. He was a self-employed excavator who worked on a wide variety of projects over his career including the creation of Paper Birch ski area and Grampa's Woods Estates, both in Tafton. At the same time, he raised beef cattle on his farm. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by one daughter: Wendy Wehrmann and her husband William of Greentown; two sons: Timothy Martin and his wife Debra of Evening Shade, AR and Matthew Martin and his wife Heather of Blooming Grove; and five grandsons: Caleb, Ethan and Jared Wehrmann, and Carl and Corbin Martin. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
