I didn’t know this lady too well and I am wrapping my mind and emotions around her being gone. What I do know is that she loved my dad and she loved my grandma and took care of her even when taking care of her was hard. When I did get to visit with her she was kind and she always sent me a card and a little gift on holidays as I was growing up. My dad reconnected, spending more time with her and her family, after he retired and moved closer. He has some great memories growing up with her and I have always loved hearing those stories.
One of my most prominent memories with my aunt is when I was about 10 which would make my big sister 12 and my little sister 8. My parents decided to take a second honeymoon to Hawaii. Their first was a camping trip and, from what I can remember, they wanted something more grand and finally had enough funds. So they popped my sisters and I on a plane to my grandma and my aunt who lived just around the corner with her family. I don’t think my poor grandma was prepared for three little girls who were more like wild cats. We didn’t visit this side of my family often and normally our visits were during Christmas and so we were on our “best” behavior. This visit was during summer and we were a rowdy crew on a good day. After a few days my grandma decided to ship us off to my Aunt and Uncle at their summer house in the Poconos. My cousins are older than us by more than ten years and they were so much fun! They took us out in the motor boat and my cousin held us in his arms as he was water skiing. We got to swim and have picnics and it was a blast. I remember my aunt as kind and loving and the master of the plans. She corralled us, fed us, made sure we bathed and slept and had a great time. It is a good memory and I know she loved us just because we were family. Even if we didn’t see each other often.
A final memory I have from one of the last times I saw her is of her and my dad snuggled up on a hammock. I could not hear what they were chatting about but the belly laughs were loud and clear. I have been looking for that photo but still have not put my hands on it…
I am sad that I didn’t get to have many extended family memories with either side of my family and I am grateful for the ones I do get to keep in a tight space in my heart. I know this lady was special by watching her love on my dad and how she continued to care for my grandmother through the end of her life even when dementia made things so difficult.
I am saying prayers and holding her family in my heart as they navigate life without her. I am hoping to hug and shower my dad in love as he loses his sister and the last of his immediate family. It definitely resonates with me that he is getting up there and I may lose him sooner rather than later.
This photo is my sweet Sarah and one of the few times she got to meet her great aunt.
Goodbye Aunt Barb. Thank you for being you and loving me and mine the best you could. I am envisioning you in a happy place with your laughter ringing loud. My heart goes out to my cousins during what I imagine is a difficult time. I am holding you all in my heart and wishing you well.
