Joan Runyon, age 78, of Elmcroft Of Mid Valley, Peckville and formerly of Hawley, PA, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. Mrs. Runyon was born September 22, 1934 in Pringle, PA and was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Ivanovitch) Balberchak. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Walter Runyon as well as two brothers, Michael & Joseph Balberchak, four sisters, Elizabeth Medwetz, Mae Oleksy, Irene Reeder and Anna Furman. She worked in the editing departments of Highlights for Children and The News Eagle. Joan liked crocheting, camping and loved her dogs. Mrs. Runyon was a member of PSAD-Pennsylavania Society of the Advancement of the Deaf and ICDA-International Catholic Deaf Assoc. She is survived by one sister: Dorothy Leonardi of MS and one brother: Paul Balberchak of FL; Sister-in-law, Ann Mae Sabatelle of Scranton, PA; many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Thursday, January 3rd from 8:30 to 9:30 AM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley by Rev. Richard W. Beck. Burial will be in B.V.M.
