Elwood E. Mather, age 77, of Hawley, died Wednesday, March 28, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. Born June 9, 1929, in Violetsville, MD, he was the son of the late Elwood and Edna(Crouse) Mather, Sr. He is survived by his wife, the former Bernice Egner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie.
Rev. Mather earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Nyack Missionary College and a Masters of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in Springfield, IL. He was Pastor Emeritus of Bethel Lutheran Church, Rowland. He had served in churches in Beeville and Three Rivers, TX; Enfield, NH; New Milford, CT; Ridgewood, NY; Scranton, PA; Fort Lee, NJ; Palisades Park, NJ and Rowland, PA, and was a Chaplin at Brighten at Julia Ribaudo. He was additionally a member of St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pine Island, NY. He was also a member of the Northeastern Barbershop Chorus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Edie Haughney of Washingtonville, NY; sons: Rev. Elwood Mather III of Middletown, NY, and Craig Engvaldsen of Rowland, PA; daughters & sons-in-law, Jan & Herb Strunk of Bethany, PA, and Beth & Tom Dowd of Hawley, PA; sons and daughters-in-law: Mark & Linda Mather of Lindenhurst, NY, and Andrew & Kathleen Mather of Sterling Heights, MI; sisters & brothers-in-law: Margaret & Donald Einolf of Baltimore, MD, Josephine & Aubrey Lang of Williamstown, NJ, Carolyn & Lloyd Edwards of Glen Burnie, MD, and Sharlene & Chris Wiebking of Maryland; brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas & Agnes Mather of Glen Burnie, MD, and David & Sharon Mather of Linthicom, MD; 16 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl, and a sister, Claire.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Apr. 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Teeters East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley. The funeral will be Monday, Apr. 2, at 10:00 AM at Bethel Lutheran Church, Church Road, Rowland, with Rev. Norman R. Beighley, Pastor, officiating. There will also be a funeral service at St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine Island, NY, on Mon., Apr. 2, at 2:00PM. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Pine Island on Monday.
