Obituary of Doris T. Phelan-Volpe
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris T. Phelan-Volpe, 79, of Hawley, went home to the arms of her Beloved Lord and Savior on May 9, 2007. She was born and raised in Queens, NY, to Paul and Jeannette Phelan. She graduated from John Adams High School in Ozone Park, NY. After World War II ended, she married Lou, gave birth to three children and moved to suburban Merrick, NY. In the early 1970s, Doris and her family took up permanent residence in a home they built in the forest, just outside of Hawley. Doris soon became active in her church following a life-changing experience on a Cursillo weekend. She was heavily involved in the local Catholic Charismatic movement and founded a local prayer group that continued for many years. Doris was a member of the Franciscan Order as well as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She taught Catechism for several years, and served as the first Lay Director of Religious Education in the Queen of Peace Parish, a position she held until retirement at the age of 70.
Doris was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved good food, good friends and the sound of laughter. The local community looked forward to her sausage and peppers for many years at the annual church block party in Hawley. She always saw the half full glass in life, and shared her positive outlook and humor with others. Doris adored the peace and tranquility of her home for nearly 35 years. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her, and will live on forever in their hearts.
Doris is survived by her children, Jeannette and Bruce Volpe of Hawley, PA and her daughter Corrine Volpe of Lake Worth, FL. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Bruce Jr., Nick and Kira. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to Hospice St. John, 416 Main Street, Suite D, Honesdale, PA 18431, or to the AseraCare Hospice Inpatient Unit at Mid-Valley Hospital, 1400 Main St., Peckville, PA 18452. Much gratitude and appreciation goes out to the staff of both hospices for the compassionate and loving care they provided during her long final journey. The family would like to extend special thanks to Doris caregiver, Belinda, for all the tenderness and comfort she gave from her heart
Calling hours will be Friday May 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 12, at 9:30AM at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 319 Chestnut Ave, Hawley by Rev. Richard W. Beck.
