Fred, I will always think of you like the song "To Sir, with love". You took me from crayons to perfume, and I do not know how to THANK YOU!
You have been a special part of my life, since I can remember. You were not only there for my special events, you made them happen. I will never forget you taking me to Alexander's to buy my communion dress. You sat there for two hours letting me try on every one, until I found the perfect one. I learned how to eat an ice cream cone from you. You took me to get my ears pierced, you helped me out when I did not use my best judgment. You took my children to Florida, because you knew I would not be able to take them. You let them stay with you whenever they needed to. You came right over to help Richie and I when they tried to steal our car and put the steering wheel back in. You spent every Christmas day with us, and it will never be the same.
I have so many things to thank you for, but most of all I want to thank you for loving my sister. Yours was a love like no other.
You will be my forever friend,
and I will miss you.
Thanks for everything. You have will always be, The Best!
Your Buddy

The Main Beam
I was introduced to him in 1967, he was Fred then. When I think back to that time, it seemed that we only ran into each other, either accidentally or on holidays… whenever it was, it was just hi & bye. Then came the spring of 1968……
I don’t know how or why,… But there was a group of us that gathered at the Half Moon Bar every Saturday night, Stella included…… and through that….. there was a bond created between the both of us, then he became Freddie.
We shared life and all it had to offer in some real good times as well as some real bad times, I guess that was a relationship, as it turned out, that was needed to be had by both of us; I had one blood brother, but Freddie was my one brother. Sometimes we even did things without thinking of the consequences: like going to a Rockaway Beach lumber yard to get 40 sheets of sheetrock & put them on top of his 1970 Chevy Caprice , while all the way from Rockaway to Forrest Ave. in Ridgewood, JoAnne, Freddie and I were marveling at how the roof in the car was not letting us sit up straight & not thinking that the windows in the car are about to pop out, from the weight / or the time he borrowed my car, and as a gag put a pin through the rubbers that I had in the glove compartment.
There was the forward Freddie, I remember him asking Mary Martin the owner of the Half Moon if he could feel her big breast to see if they were real, and to which he got a slap across the face, and then fell off the stool laughing. We differed in just as many things as agreed on, most notably music…. I have always been big on Sinatra, but he never told me he wasn’t, but when I got turned on to Neil Diamond he did too……his favorite songs were Solitary man & Morningside, and we couldn’t play the music loud enough, it’s been 35 years and I am still listening to that Neil Diamond album, and thinking of times gone bye with Freddie. I was happy to hear from JoAnne that he got to see him in live concert.
We all have a Freddie story….. I don’t care who you are, if you knew Freddie, you have a Freddie story; In construction, to build a house you need a main beam, Freddie, up until the time he got hurt in 1994, was the main beam of all of us, it didn’t matter what the problem or project was, he was always there, he made our problems, his problems.
Freddie becoming sick became my weakness, it became denial…. I guess I had hoped for a magic bullet pill or medical breakthrough to cure him. Not seeing him, I could remember him as he was….. Well, things just don’t work that way.
Thank God that there was JoAnne! She has shown the meaning of dedication, devotion and dependability, and became the main beam to the man that was our main beam.
I thank you for Freddie and for myself for taking care of and loving the man that will always be my best friend…
Jerry

Uncle Freddy,
You were always so big and strong to me. My mom called on you many times to help us out and you always did.
I remember your silly laugh, my dad making me get you "Kojak" lollipops, and you teasing us kids, but we loved it.
Brian and Joanne, I don't know what to say except that you took good care of him and he loved you dearly.
