Obituary of Gertrude E. Schardt

Gertrude E. Schardt, age 94, of Hawley died at home Monday, August 1, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Schardt, in 1981. Born May 14, 1917, in Hawley, she was the daughter of the late Hugo G. and Elise M. (Hanf) Wahren. She was a graduate of Hawley High School. She was a retired school aide for Wallenpaupack School District and had also worked at Pep's Inn and as a dental assistant to Dr. Tether. Mrs. Schardt was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Hope Chapter 9 in Hawley and Harriet Greene Chapter 198 in Hamlin. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years and was on the Church Council for many years, as well as a member of Willing Workers and WELCA. She enjoyed fishing and camping trips to Canada. She is survived by a son: George Schardt and his wife Jean of Miami, FL; two daughters: JoAnn Bronson and her husband Ronald of Tuscon, AZ, and Elizabeth Ditton and her husband David of Jamestown, OH; a brother: Max Wahren of Clarks Summit, PA; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Calling hours will be Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9 to 10 AM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will be Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 405 Church St., Hawley, with Rev. Colleen E. Cox, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 405 Church St., Hawley, PA 18428; Alzheimer's Association NEPA Regional, 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701; or Wayne Memorial Hospice, C/o Wayne Memorial Hospital, 601 Park St., Honesdale, PA 18431
