I never would have learned the French language so well without him. Not only was he an expert, himself, but he had a straightforward way of teaching French grammar which made perfect sense to me. In addition, his enthusiasm and willingness to help his students were unparalleled. He is certainly missed.

I enjoyed many years of hunting with "Smitty", as well as seeing him in school. I also enjoyed servicing Jim's lawn equipment and the occasional trip to get coal. Occasionally we got together for dinner. I will miss Smitty, as I truly enjoyed our friendship.

Jason and Andrea--
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad, Jason. Believe me when I say that I know how hard this is, and is going to be, for you. I lost my father, very suddenly and unexpectedly, on December 31, 2005. He was 59. Nothing I can say will make this any better. All I can say is that time will help you heal. Treasure your fondest memories of your Dad and be comforted by knowing that he is watching you from above and is so proud of you. Thinking of you and your family, during this most difficult time. --Julie

Dear Mrs. Smith and Family,
My deepest condolences at the loss of your precious husband & father. I am so sorry for your loss. I would personally like you to know that I had the privilege & pleasure of meeting Mr.Smith when I was a Freshman at WAHS taking French {30 some years ago}. I thoroughly enjoyed being under his brilliant teaching for 4 years! He had a unique way of handling the classroom setting.....we knew when it was time to laugh and when it was time to get serious!! I really appreciated his ways*
Mr. Smith went beyond the call of duty
for me as one of his students. I want to share you with you a Noble Man who impacted the course of my life. It was a few days, or maybe weeks, before I was Graduating. I was walking down the hallway past the French Room & your loved one walked into the hallway. He asked me what my plans were after Graduation. For a moment I didn't know what to say. My answer was that I was going to continue waitressing at Woodloch Pines. Mr. Smith had a wonderful suggestion that I consider college and not only that he would help me get the ball rolling. He shared about his years at East Stroudsburg State College and he talked about a Pell Grant and Work Study. He went further by saying he would take care of making these things happen for me. And, that he did!! My parents found out I was going to college when I showed them my acceptance papers!!! I thank & Praise God for placing James Russell Smith in my life. He had a heart of gold! I have wanted to tell Mr. Smith these same words in person. I truly regret not having done so. I am so honored to be able to share them with you.....his Beloved Family. May God's Peace & Comfort carry you through each day.
With my deepest sympathy,
Susan Mougnos Timm

It doesn't seem possible. I just saw Jim at our store. He was always in picking something up-always with a smile on his face. Even though I didn't do that well in his French class I always remembered enough to address Jim in French. I always had respect and admiration for Jim and am sorry he has passed. I will miss him and his smile.

My father truly loved and lived for his family, friends, co-workers, and students. Thank you to everyone who attended services and shared thoughts, stories, and sentiments. Jim Smith, Pierre, Pepe, Smitty, etc. could not have asked for a greater group of people to have in his life.

Joy and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow and loss; Jim was a great teacher and an even better man.
I recall our times together and fellowship at the former Hawley Lodge 309 F & AM when he became a member back in the early 80s and was honored to have played a part in it.
May you find comfort and solace in the knowledge that he is now safe in God's protective arms.

M. Smith was my favorite teacher and I think of him so often as I struggle to continue with my french. I was priviledged to go on the first french trip he took, which he told me years later was his favorite... I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I learned so much from this man who introduced me to Le Petit Prince... To Joy and his family, as the french would say, 'Prend Courage'...and we have you in our prayers.

I took French for four years which meant I was privileged to have Jim Smith as a teacher more than anyone else at WAHS. I went to Paris and London with him and a bunch of upperclassmen as a freshman, an experience I have never forgotten. He invited his (and my) Methodist pastor, Edgar Singer, in to a class my senior year on Existentialism: it was a chance to see that faith and reason could go together and that is a gift which has had long-term ripples in my life. He was a really good guy, and I was sad to read of his passing, and sadder still that I cannot be there to pay my respects.
