James Russell Smith, age 67, of Paupack died unexpectedly Thursday, December 1, at home. He is survived by his wife, the former Joy Kay Miller. Born January 12, 1944, in East Stroudsburg, PA, he was the son of Miriam (LaBar) Smith of Marshalls Creek and the late Elwood James Smith. He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State University with a BA in Humanities and taught French at Wallenpaupack Area High School until his retirement. He also developed and administered the Gifted Program at Wallenpaupack. Mr. Smith was a member of the PA State Education Association and the PA State Education Association-Retired, National Education Association and National Education Association-Retired, PA Association of School Retirees, National Rifle Association, Masonic Fraternity Honesdale Lodge #218 F&AM and former Hawley Lodge #309, Valley of Scranton Masonic Consistory, Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, American Association of Teachers of French, the Paupack United Methodist Church and Bellemonte Hunting and Fishing Club. He loved animals, especially his cairn terrier, Mac. He is also survived by his son, Jason and his wife Andrea of Nazareth; a brother, Stephen and his wife Pam of Telford; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Calling hours will be Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 5 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will be Monday, Dec. 5, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Robert L. Wood of Paupack United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Paupack , following the service.
