Q: What will you miss most about William?
A: Popi is an amazing grandfather and I will truly miss him. when we came over to the lake house, it was always a family get-together for the holidays and summertime's. That being, playing games, eating delicious meals together, riding the quads around the lake, and enjoying family time together is one of favorite memories.
I always remembered how Popi had a contagious laugh that would fill the room with joy. Christmas and the summer gathering were just the best times. It's amazing how one person can have such a positive impact on so many lives. Popi was a true gem and his presence will be sorely missed, but the love he shared with everyone will always remain in our hearts.
He was truly the life of the gathering and made sure everyone felt welcomed. I'm so glad to have had Popi in my life and treasure those special memories. His legacy of bringing people together and spreading happiness will continue to live on through those memories, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Rest in peace, Popi. May his spirit continue to inspire me to spread joy and kindness wherever we go. He will always hold a special place in my heart and will cherish all the memories I have of him forever.

I will always remember the mischievous gleam in Popi’s eyes He was always up to something. He would cheat at games wanting to get caught, zip me around the lake until I got tossed off the tube, and made up fun games! He had an adventurous spirit that I hope to inherit from him. I want to be smiling, laughing and always up to something just like Popi.

Being the youngest I couldn’t do everything the older kids did, but Popi would always hang out with me. It was our special time. I loved having fun with him riding in his corvette and him laughing when he tossed my brother off the tube. I will always remember having fun with Popi.

In several of my past Christmas letters, I called Bill, “The Bionic Man” because he had so many operations and he always bounced back so well. He was such a fighter he got back to skiing, golfing, boating and just living the lift he loved with a smile on his face. I never ever heard him complain.
Bill once told Bob and I a story of him driving home from somewhere across the country. He picked up a hitch hiker. There was some sort of altercation with another car. Bill and his passenger went off the highway and his car rolled over about 3-4 times. Neither one of them were hurt and if I remember correctly, he drove the car out of the field and kept driving home.
It was always so much fun spending New Year’s Eve with Bill & Lynn and our family and friends at Capri on Lake Wallenpaupack. There was about 20-30 of us dancing and listening to music with lots of smiles and great memories wearing our New Year’s Eve hats, horns, and necklaces.
One of my fondest memories of Bill was going to the Pine Barrens in New Jersey and canoeing on a river with his school group. Jason and Keith and I had so much fun navigating the flowing river, ducking under the branches and steering away from the riverbanks due to the small rapids that were on that river.
With Bill & Bob passing, its like the end of a fun and wonderful chapter. I will miss them both dearly.
Love Karen Roettger

He will be truly missed. Bill and Lynne treated me, my brother Bobby and my dad like family. Never forgetting all of the great times we had at the lake house. Bill was always there to help and entertain us. He always let us use his toys to play on the lake, even though I always found a way to break something. He always still let me come back for another fun weekend. LOL
He may be gone, but the memories will always be in our hearts.

To Bill's Family,
It is with the greatest sorrow that I try in a small way to express the love that I have for Bill. And now with the loss of him, It is impossible to verbalize what he meant to me in my life. I have lost more than a friend. He was the brother I never had. In life when times are good you always find plenty of friends who help you enjoy the good fortune but in times of hardship and pain you quickly find out who your real friends are. As you all know, I went through that hard time, very hard. The loss of my family, my home, my job, and all my worldly possessions. And in that darkness there was a ray of light. It was Bill with open arms! He gave me so much more than friendship. He gave my his family, all of you! Whenever there was a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or wedding, Bill made me part of your family. It is impossible to verbalize all the beautiful times we had. The best times of my life were with Bill by my side. We were like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I was the one with the crazy ideas and Bill was always the one to get me out of it. How do you thank a person for that? I am not sure. I leave you with this:
There was one time up at the lake on a beautiful summer day he had an old sailboat that was not used a lot. I told Lynne I was going to talk to him about taking it out on the lake. We did. Beautiful summer sunset with a beautiful breeze across the water. I said to Bill, with all the troubles in the world, I wish we could sail on forever. I lean on my faith now. Knowing the love I have for him as my faith has taught me is just an interruption. There will come a time that there will be a soft wind and I can tell him how much I love him and we will sail on forever.

My grandfather was a great person, and I always loved hanging out with him. He always knew the best ways to throw us off of tubes and even got me to do a flip in one as a child. Its thanks to him that some day I would like to own a house on a lake so that I can invite everyone to come and make memories together. From the great big family games we held growing up to jetskiing and holiday gatherings, Popi knew how to have fun and get everyone involved. I think, however that I will always cherish my memories of him taking me around in his corvette to car shows the most. He loved his car and always enjoyed when I came around bugging him to let me drive it, and when the time came that he finally caved I forgot my license and couldn't. I will always fondly look back on the memories I have with him and look forward to the day when much like him, I can show my family the same love and enthusiasm he always with us.

Popi was a daredevil who always encouraged us to face our fears, try new things, and most importantly have fun. Going to visit Popi and Grandma was always the highlight of summer. Some of my earliest memories of Popi were him convincing me to go out on the tube, promising me that he wouldn’t go too fast or make it too scary. I was very surprised when he did in fact go fast and tried his best to throw me from the tube. But it was fun and exciting, knowing that I won by staying in the tube. It became a competition, could he toss you from the tube or were you able to conquer the sudden turns, skipping across the water at what seemed to be the speed of light as a kid. Taking rides in the boats was always a fun experience filled with wonder, the speed making it feel like you were flying. In the winter he would encourage us to go sledding down these steep icy hills, making sure to give us a good push, our parents down at the bottom to tackle us if we got too close to trees. He taught me how to water ski and encouraged my love for the outdoors and nature. When he learned I wanted to be a teacher he was happy and told me countless stories, talking about fun trips he went on with his classes, his memorable students, and giving me advice and encouragement. He helped support me when I wanted to go on a senior trip in college. It was to Texas to search for dinosaur bones and hike through the desert. Without him I wouldn’t have been able to hold a dinosaur bone in my hand or see the desert at night with its humbling expanse of stars. It meant a lot when he was there at my graduation. I learned a lot from Popi. He taught me that not all things that seemed frightening were actually scary, that fun and joy were often the reward for overcoming your fears.

Growing up our visits with Popi were always one of my favorite things to do. He was always encouraging us to have fun and explore the outdoors. I’ve never been much of a hugger, but I always loved to get hugs from Popi. I will cherish my memories with him always. A memory I will always love is when he would called me “Gabe”. It was a nickname he gave me when I was younger and it stuck. He never called me by my full name and I will always look back on this memory and chuckle.

When I would see Bill in and about West Brook, he always had a smile on his face. I know he liked the outdoors. But, spending a day with him and Lynn at their home on the lake, I could see the enjoyment in his soul. What fun that day! Good friends, good food, a jet ski and most importantly --- lots of laughter. A wonderful memory it is!

Popi nurtured my love of the outdoors and taught us to always have fun in life. Halloween became my favorite holiday because of him. When I was 5 years old Popi and his childhood friend, John Ryan, made a scarecrow attached to a clothesline. They sent us out into the dark yard and of course the scarecrow moved towards us! It was the first of many pranks to follow. Even though I was terrified when he took me to haunted houses, it was always a fun and memorable time. It became a tradition to go to haunted houses with my own family. To this day I still decorate my yard and play spooky music for the neighborhood kids. He was always setting up trips with family and friends; to picnic in state parks, camping at beaches or finding interesting lodges in upstate to go snowmobiling, skating, and even rope bridges over freezing streams. He was a dedicated teacher; I know this because he always took us on his amazing class trips. We went skiing, camping/canoeing, and attended Beatlemania, museums, and Broadway shows. Popi also brought his grandkids on his school skiing trips. We always looked forward to our road trip vacations in our family boat of a station wagon, sitting in the 3rd seat with the important job of being a human radar detector looking for police. He always played games with us and loved them. Games were always fun with him because he would think of creative ways to cheat. Even in his 80s he would get a cunning glint in his eyes and try to slide a second card on top while playing Uno. He would have a huge smile on his face and feign ignorance of the rules, knowing he wasn’t allowed to do something but hoping you would let him, and in our last games, I let him. I will always love and cherish my memories. Love you Popi.

“The Leader of the Pack”
I was blessed to have Popi as my father. He was strict but a fun father. He set the bar high for me and my sisters. He was my role model. He was a fine example of what a man should be. Popi never spoke a bad word about anyone nor did I ever hear a foul word from my father, in my entire life. You would know that if you were half the man he was, you were on the right track.
There are so many fond memories that would not even touch the surface to explain how he was larger than life.
One particular memory was of a vacation to Florida in the old station wagon with my mom and sisters. Th car broke down near Daytona Beach, Popi didn’t miss a beat and treated as an extended vacation for a few extra days. We didn’t realize that it was unplanned since we had so much fun. He kept his cool.

Popi was definitely a fun father to have. He always made everything an adventure. Shoveling the driveway wasn't a chore when actually you were building an igloo. Getting called to dinner was trying to escape the monster. Or after a scary movie, Popi crawling into our bedroom at night and jumping up scaring us to death. Even apple picking was an adventure having look outs to sneak across the line to get the "good" apples. We were always doing something from skiing, ice skating, ice boating, Sunday sailing races or relaxing planting a garden. I loved the year Popi planted corn in our front yard. All the neighbors commented on it and Popi would smile and say he couldn't wait to eat it. The best were the long drives to Miami when by the end of it his one arm having hung out the window on the drive down was tan while the other wasn't. We always played monopoly that lasted more than one night......had to make sure that Popi didn't cheat and move things around during the day. He was known for cheating. It added a level of excitement to any game to catch Popi in the act. In later years, it was heartening hearing my children scream, "Popi, no cheating!". It brought back fond memories. He was a rascal with his granchildren. It was a coming of age for them to get tossed around while getting pulled on the back of the boat. Whenever the grandchildren talk about it, they share how far they got tossed off the tube. Yes, we will miss you Popi but we will have so many memories to take with us and you will be in our hearts in all of our coming adventures.

Hide ‘n Seek
On rainy days, we would play hide ‘n seek in the house.
Popi would hide the youngest, Jessica, and the three of us would look for her. It was a super challenge to find Jessica. She wasn’t in the washer machine or the dryer. Believe it or not, Popi hid her on the top shelf of their walk in closet with my mother’s wig on her head.
As we got older, hide ‘n seek went outdoors. State land was across the street from our house in Ringwood. We would give him a 15 minutes head start into the woods. He took a roll of toilet paper and left a scantily trail behind. Of course, he hid himself as well. Whoever tagged him, would win the prize, a chocolate candy bar.
Winter times meant snow foot prints to follow in order to catch him…

Bill married my mom when I was 10 years old. He was a part of every major event in my life. I've included a picture from my wedding day. As so many people have said... Bill knew how to live life - and it was all about having fun and being adventurous. His adventurous spirit influenced me immediately. I remember as a kid, he took us on a hike at Mohonk. We went up the rock scramble where you crawl through rocks, navigate up skinny ladders, and basically do everything except walk a straight path on your feet! I loved it! I was the ultra nerd as a kid (probably still am...) so Bill probably saved me from true geekdom because he helped me find my adventurous spirit.

The Dobish Family
I have always felt special being Bill’s younger sister, and I have many fond memories of my brother Bill. He was twenty-one when I was born, and my mother was forty and my father was forty. My mother told me that he was very dependable and would always help her. We lived in Weehawken the first three years of my life. One time I was in the carriage, and Bill and my mom were walking down the street together. She told me that people would stop and stare because people couldn’t figure out the relationship between the three of us.
Bill always had a twinkle in his eye, and I could tell he was planning something. Bill liked to tease me as older brothers often do. When I was little, I went into the bathroom. The shower curtain was moving and billowing out followed by strange ghost sounds. Then, he yelled, “Boo!'' and popped out of the shower and frightened me. It took me a long time to stop looking behind the shower curtain every time I went into the bathroom.
We moved to Bogota when I was three and my brothers Bill and Bob lived in the upstairs bedroom until they both got married. Sometimes, on my birthday Bill would come to my parent’s house and bring a birthday cake. He was very thoughtful and always made me feel special.
One time at Karen and Bob’s house on Fairview Lake, Bill asked Michael to go out on the big catamaran. It was the one that no one could get out of the water. Bob shook his head and let them both go out on the lake. Of course, out in the middle of the lake, Bill managed to turn it over. They had to have it towed back and flip it back over close to shore. Bob said to Michael, “Now you know my brother Bill.”
When Michael turned thirty, we surprised him with a birthday party. When Bill arrived, he walked in with a life-size blow-up female doll. Needless to say, we had many laughs when Bill was around.
Michael, myself, Nicole, and Christopher all have great memories of going to Bill’s & Lynn’s house on Lake Wallenpaupack. While driving the boat, he would narrate the history of the lake, and we remember seeing the eagle’s nest. Nicole and Chris had lots of fun tubing with Bill as the captain of the boat.
We all have been truly blessed to be a part of Bill’s life. He was a wonderful brother and uncle to us.
We love you forever! Patti, Michael, Chris, Nicole, and Mehmet

I will always remember Mr. Roettger for his smile and infectious laughter. One of my earliest memories of him is when he and my father taught me to ski at Sterling Forest. I was coming down the "mouse hill" towards them in front of the lodge and despite all their encouragement I could not manage to stop. I ducked, he must have jumped and I passed right under his legs. It was a story that I loved to tell as a kid. Over the years I learned that if you were spending time with Mr. Roettger, there was sure to be a funny story to tell in the end. I am grateful for the laughter and joy that he brought to our family.

I am saddened by Bill's passing. I am so sad for his wife. I was a fellow resident with him at Julia R's. It was there I got to know his amazing wife Lynn. Bill was so robust, so funny and so kind. I will never forget his happy smile. I loved the way he would arch one brow and roll his eyes every time he thought someone was being ridiculous . He always made me laugh! I am sad for his wife also. She was by his side every day for hours. She was so involved in his care. The love she exhibited helped me relearn what love is. She is a hero to me. She not only too k care of Bill, she took care of me and a bunch of other residents. She even took care of the staff! So, for Bill, I wish the " peace beyond understanding" . For Lynn I wish for healing.

Mr. Bill where do we begin? With your big warm generous heart that always made everyone feel welcome, your infectious smile and laugh, or that “cat that caught the canary” look when teasing or sneaking our dogs treats which they loved immensely!
I think what we’ll miss most were our foursome Road Trip Adventures. One that stands out, was the day we set out to have lunch at the Viking Ship Bar. Locals only knew how to get there by snowmobile. After several hours, now thinking we should have packed lunch, and directions specific as "to stay to the right after passing the stone wall", we finally arrived at the elusive Viking Ship Bar only to find out it was CLOSED. I don’t think we ever laughed so hard.
Or our Philly trip where we nicknamed the navigation system “The Bitch in the Box” after continually defying her directions and endless repetition of “Recalculating” she finally stopped talking to us for about 20 minutes. Other trips took us to walking into the wrong wedding venue, exploring old cemeteries, and let’s not forget the numerous Car Shows we participated in and the interesting people we met.
The Lower Road Family & Friends Weekends were always a huge success due to your entertainment creativeness. From your bubble wrapped poles for Water Jousting, your invention of Kayak-a-ball, endless supply of cardboard for the Water Boat Races, and even getting up at 4AM to roast the hind leg of a cow. Winter was just as much fun with making an ice skating rink, snow tubing, sledding and even an ice boat. Good times were enjoyed by all.
We could go on for hours, but we already know you’re planning some new adventures. So, until we meet again, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! Love You Always, Herb & Karen Trommer

Travels with Bill
I’ve been a colleague and friend of Bill’s since the late 1960’s, when we were both teachers and coaches in the Paramus School District. Together, Bill and I had many hilarious and harrowing adventures. One such adventure took place in the middle of winter when we took a road trip to rescue two horses that were in the Adirondack area of upstate New York. Driving up with an empty horse trailer, we hit a large bump in the road and the horse trailer broke off of the car hitch. We didn’t realize that the trailer had broken free until it went past us on the adjacent lane. Luckily, it came peacefully to rest down the road a bit. Handyman Bill was able to get some parts, put the hitch and trailer back together and we were on the road again. We were able to arrive safely at our destination and loaded the horses into the trailer just as it began to snow. Horses, trailer, car and the two amigo’s were soon navigating their way down the NYS thruway, through a blizzard. I was driving while Bill manned the CB radio, creating our handle of the “pony express”. By the time we arrived in New Jersey, around midnight, there was more than 10 inches of snow on the ground. We led the horses into their stalls in the barn, fed them hay and grain and they were happily chomping away by 12:30 a.m. Bill and I looked at one another, shook our heads, took a deep breath and smiled. I will miss Bill and wish for God’s blessings on his newest adventure! Gilbert Young

I have so many wonderful memories with my Uncle Bill, one of my fondest memories are the times he took Keith and I skiing at Sterling Forrest. Uncle Bill ran a snow skiing club for his students in middle school and my mom would drop Keith and I off at Casa Maria's on route 17 in Ramsey and we would jump on the bus with Uncle Bill and go snow skiing. We both loved it and had so much fun. There are of course some funny stories with him as well. Like the time he was at our Lake House water skiing, he handed us some cherry bombs and told us to throw them in the water while he was skiing, so we would throw them on the opposite side of the wake and he would ski over to them. He was definitely a character especially at Christmas, he took great joy in wrapping our gifts with duct tape, glue, several layers of wrapping paper and then laugh at us struggling to open our gifts, we loved it though. He made life fun and interesting for all of us. He will be greatly missed.
Love you Uncle Bill!
Love and prayers to Aunt Lynn, Aunt Patty, Pilar, Billy, Betty, Jessica, Denise and the rest of his family and friends near and far.
Love Jason and Jennifer Roettger

I’m so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. I worked with Bill several years and he was always a pleasure to work with. I always looked forward to our conversations and I worked with him during several of my life milestones. He will always be a patient I will never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with Lynn and his family during this difficult time.

Uncle Bill memories. Uncle bill coming to visit us at the lake in his nice corvette and his nice pickup truck. Going to his house on Wallenpaupack and making boats out of card board and duct tape. Laughing, dancing and celebrating new years at Capri. Going on a big family adventure to Great wolf lodge. His big smile and reminding me so much of my dad. With Love Ryan

I have nothing but good memories of Popi. He was a badass and both my grandparents gave back to my cousins and I in so many ways. We had so many wonderful experiences and memories made with Popi and Nana. Everything from jet skiing, tubing in their boat, going quading and having the chance to drive Popi’s Corvette are ways he gave back to us and more. Our Christmases spent up there were some of the best times I have had. I am eternally grateful for my time I was able to spend with him.

We were Bill and Lynn’s neighbors at Lake Wallenpaupack for over 10 years. We were new to lake life but so fortunate to have the best neighbors imaginable. Bill was always so generous with his time and knowledge. The years we spent as Bill and Lynn’s neighbors hold some of my families most cherished memories. I feel fortunate to have know him, and of course Lynn as well. Peace my friend.

Is my heart is so saddened... My smart funny and totally education committed 8th grade team teaching partner at Westbrook junior high school... I just loved him. Is so many wonderful fun years... His classes weren't lessons... They were memories of science lessons that were fun to watch, Is fun to experiment with, Is but more importantly, If they were lessons in life skills to think... To observe... Is to evaluate... Is to make wise choices...
Yes, Bill was a master teacher... Is but more importantly, He has been my wonderful friend... So truly missed and loved...
May God-bless and comfort his wonderful dedicated and loving wife, Lynn.

He was larger then life. Bill was a tall man, but boy did he have such a gentle heart. Every time I walked into his home he would say "Here comes my friend" he would then tap the cushion next to him and say come sit next to me.... You will be missed my buddy.

Mr. Roettger was definitely a presence in the eighth grade hallway at WestBrook - even though he wasn't my homeroom teacher, he was always around and available to anyone who needed him. Like many others, I will mostly remember him from ski trips to Sterling Forest on Friday nights and longer ski trips during school breaks.

Mr. Roettger fostered my love of skiing, taking a bunch of middle schoolers skiing every Friday night in the winter. I still can't believe he trusted all of us on the slopes, but somehow, we all had the mutual respect for him to not do anything too stupid out there. I look back on all of those memories so fondly. Rest in Peace!

Although we didn’t know anything about Bill until we met him and his lovely wife Lynn at Julia Ribaudo, he seemed to be a gentle soul. For the most part, he was always smiling. Sorry we didn’t have the opportunity to get to know him better.
May he always Rest In Peace.

We remember meeting Bill many years ago when our girls were students at Westbrook Middle school. Bill and Lynn took a bus load of students skiing on Friday nights. He was such a caring person and watched over the students that he brought as if they were his own kids. On their breaks from skiing we sat in the lodge and talked. He loved teaching almost as much as his family. He was such a nice friendly guy that loved life and was a joy to be with. He will truly be missed.

My sincere condolences to the Roetteger family. Mrs R was my all time favorite teacher. Mr. R was a great teacher and together were a dynamic duo that braved 8th graders year after year. Frost Valley and skiing stand out in my mind. My sister, Patti, was in Mr. Roetteger's class and somehow we ended up adopting a rabbit from him.
Prayers to all at this difficult time, Dr. Linda (Hamilton) Godfrey

My condolences to the Roettger family.
Mr. Roettger was the best teacher I had inside and outside the classroom. I recall him giving me the courage to take on my first hill skiing at Frost Valley in ‘82. Looking back, it was probably no bigger than one’s backyard!
Respectfully,
Ken Hoffman

I think the memory John would have shared is the time they were on the Jersey Turnpike and Bill rolled his Volkswagen. It landed on its wheels so they just drove on. I'm sure they are laughing together in heaven.

I am so sorry to learn of this sad news. Mr. Roettger was a legend at West Brook Middle School in Paramus for decades. I was fortunate to have had Mr. and Mrs. R as my 8th Grade Science and Math teachers — both of them fantastic, demanding teachers who had special gifts for melding toughness and kindness. Years later, I was lucky enough to call “Bill” and “Lynn” colleagues as a fellow teacher at West Brook. A life well-lived, Mr. Roettger! You’ve touched countless lives!!
Respectfully,
Mike Stone

Q: What will you never forget about William?
A: I remember getting a boat ride from Bills to our lake house across lake wallenpaupack. Don’t know or remember why I was alone with Bill on this little boat but he gave me the ride of my life. (I’m quite petrified of the water and fast boats) anyway I was holding on for dear life and I’m sure my knuckles were white when he looked at me and said what’s wrong? I said I’m petrified and he said of what? I’ll just never forget it! (From what I understand from Lou, and days gone by ,Bill loved speed and wasn’t afraid of anything!! ). A great guy with a great sense of humor and love of life! He will be missed and never forgotten! May he Rest In Peace❤️
